THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD
January 3/4, 2009

Which of our Jewish ancestors in faith inspires you?

Gospel Reflection (Matthew 2:1-12): The story of the astrologers, or magi, following the light of a distant star is full of surprises. The astrologers, who were Gentiles, were the first to worship Jesus as the newborn King of the Jews. They found him, not in a palace surrounded by signs of wealth and might, but as a helpless baby in the arms of Mary, his mother. Yet the astrologers believed and worshiped him, offering him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Then, Matthew tells us, full of joy and wonder, they returned to their distant homes.
The astrologers had the faith and wisdom to see in this baby the promised Messiah. Christ shows himself to us, too, and comes into our lives in many ways and through many people. If we are people of faith, we will find him in these little “epiphanies.” We will offer him our own gifts—our prayers and worship, our loving service of others, and our constant faith, even when it might seem hard to find him.

Discussion Points for Gospel: Reflect on some of the “little epiphanies” in your life. Share that with others.

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
The Epiphany of the Lord

In the Gospel, the Gentile astrologers who follow the light of the star are found to be the truly enlightened ones. Christ, the light of all nations, is found bathed in starlight. Faith in that intuitive call to journey toward the light leads to our own epiphany -- God dwells among us!

Adults: Where has the light of faith led me over the past year?

Children: When I look at the stars, what do I most appreciate about God?

THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

Epiphany is the Christian feast commemorating the revelation of Jesus to humanity, specifically the visit of the Magi. It is a feast intended to celebrate the “shining forth” or revelation of God to mankind in human form, in the person of Jesus. Some Christians commemorate the visitation of the Magi to the child Jesus on this day, while others use the day to commemorate the baptism of Jesus as an adult. The feast is also called Twelfth Day — being the twelfth day after Christmas — or Three Kings Day for those commemorating the Magi.

THANKS FROM A GIVING TREE RECIPIENT
We received a thank you card from a family helped by the Giving Tree project:

“My family and I would like to thank the people of Christ the King for making our Christmas very memorable. The gifts, food, candy (for stockings) and gift card ($100.00!!!) came in at just the right time. I just hope the people of Christ the King know the impact they have had on my family.”
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS

Sunday classes resume today, January 4; Tuesday classes resume this Tuesday, January 6.
Thank you to all who contributed to the Food Drive that benefited the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry and My Sister’s Place. The children were able to restock the pantry, clean out the storage garage, clean the shelves in the pantry and completely load the shelves with food. The children also created 124 bags of good snacks for the children of The Giving Tree Project. Of the food collected, a quarter was sent to My Sister’s Place. Your generosity is appreciated.
Sunday, January 18, at 12:30 and Tuesday, January 20, the parents of children receiving First Holy Communion meet to talk about Eucharist and to begin preparation for First Communion.

HIGH SCHOOLERS

A Youth Group created by teens for teens is holding its first meeting of the year at Christ the King at 7:30 p.m. It is a non-denominational youth group led by college students from various churches in our community. Questions, contact Chris at ca117906@ohio.edu
The Benedictine Monks of St. Andrew Abbey in Cleveland is holding a “Living with Benedict” vocation discernment weekend for men aged 18-45 on January 30-February 1. Contact Fr. Gerard: 216-721-5300, ext. 210, for more information or to book a reservation.
LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
Announcements

Following the post-communion prayer are the announcements. They let people know what is coming up in the parish during the next week or weeks. This is part of the dismissal rite, the final section of the mass. It gives us an idea of some of the ways in which we can carry on our Eucharist outside of mass.
