Statement for Triumph of the Cross Cathedral
EPIPHANY OF THE LORD
January 5/6, 2008

The Magi followed a star to find Jesus. Who or what leads you to Jesus today?

Gospel Reflection (Matthew 2:1-12): Today we celebrate the showing forth (epiphany) of Jesus to the nations beyond Israel. When astrologers, or magi, from the East saw a new star appear in the sky, they accepted it as a sign that a great leader had been born. Without knowing where the star would lead them or what they would find, the magi set out bearing gifts. Their faith and courage were rewarded when God revealed to them his own Son.

Discussion Points for Gospel:
On our faith journeys, we, too, have to remain alert for the signs through which Jesus reveals his presence to us. His “stars” are all around us: in the beauty of creation, in the Church, in the arts and sciences, in the uniqueness of each person. How will you be alert to the “stars” around you? How can you let Jesus shine through you? (--Sadlier “We Believe” www.webelieve.web.com)

Sunday Scripture Readings
     Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
     To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
The Epiphany of the Lord

   Today's Scripture challenges us to consider that beauty finds its real source in God, who speaks to our hearts and draws us closer in communion through all that is beautiful.

Adults: When and where can I take time in prayer to adore God in his beauty?

Children: What do I see that is beautiful that helps me think of God?

A BLESSING FOR A HOME
Blessed are you, our God.
For love of us, you sent your only Son
To light up our hearts and homes
With your divine radiance.
Bless our home and all who live within it.
Help us to live our lives with love and grace
That your presence may be seen
In our daily acts of service,
In our worship and family prayer,
In our kindness toward our neighbors,
And in our generosity toward guests.
Bless us, Lord, that we may be a blessing
To one another Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen.

FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY
   Epiphany is the Christian feast commemorating the revelation of Jesus to humanity, specifically the visit of the Magi. It is a feast intended to celebrate the “shining forth” or revelation of God to mankind in human form, in the person of Jesus. Some Christians commemorate the visitation of the Magi to the child Jesus on this day, while others use the day to commemorate the baptism of Jesus as an adult. The feast is also called Twelfth Day — being the twelfth day after Christmas — or Three Kings Day for those commemorating the Magi.

NATIONAL MIGRATION WEEK (NMW)
   The week of January 6-12 has been set aside this year by the U.S. Catholic bishops to observe National Migration Week. In their pastoral letter, Welcoming the Stranger Among Us: Unity in Diversity, the U.S. Catholic bishops set forth four challenges to the people of God in responding to migrants and other newcomers in their midst:
• The Call to Conversion: exhorting each of us to remember our heritage and set aside cultural fears and competition for resources, in order to better welcome newcomers;
• The Call to Communion: inviting us to the ministry of welcome and hospitality as an expression Eucharistic unity;
• The Call to Solidarity: challenging us to move beyond charity to taking a stand for true justice for those who are suffering, vulnerable and in need;
• The Call to Evangelization: encouraging us to invite others to encounter the person of Jesus, active in the world, especially in the poor, in the stranger, and in the migrant and refugee.

What Does the Catholic Church Teach About Migration?
   The five principles that form the foundation of Catholic Social Teaching about migration are rooted in the understanding that all of God’s children have a right to share in the earth’s resources. These principles teach that:
• People should not be forced to migrate due to a lack of opportunity in their homeland.
• People have a basic right to move to another land in order to support themselves and their family.
• Every nation has the right to control its border, although this right carries with it the responsibility to accommodate migrant flows.
• Refugees and asylum seekers, fleeing either war and persecution or natural disaster, have a right to protection.
• The dignity and human rights of undocumented migrants must be respected.
