"Mission to Serve": New Orleans Diary

THE EPIPHANY
OF THE LORD
January 6/7, 2007

What “signs” in your life have led you to Jesus?
Gospel Reflection (Matthew 2:1-12): As you listened to the gospel, did you hear any echoes of the Old Testament reading from Isaiah? Perhaps you noticed that in both readings people are being led by a bright light on a long journey. They want to see the Lord’s glory and honor him with gifts (gold, frankincense, and myrrh). Matthew tells us the story of the astrologers, or magi. They followed a star to find “the newborn king of the Jews.” Today’s feast is called Epiphany, a word meaning “manifestation” or “shining forth” like a light. We celebrate that day when Jesus, our Light, was first revealed to the nations beyond Israel. Just as light shines forth so that we may see in the darkness, our faith in Jesus shines forth in us.

Discussion Points for Gospel: The astrologers, or magi, represent all the peoples of the world. They had to make an effort to find Jesus. Even after seeing the star, they had to make a long journey before finding the Savior of the world. How are you like the magi? Do you have “stars” in your life that lead you on the right path to Jesus? Who or what are they?
Sometimes on long journeys, we are tempted to turn back. What keeps you on the road to Jesus?
It has been said that the star is a symbol of faith. How can your faith be a “star” for others this week? How can it light the way?
(from Sadlier “We Believe”)

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh" (Matthew 2:11).

THE EPIPHANY OF OUR LORD
The Epiphany of our Lord is the wonderful liturgical festival observed on January 6th (7th). It is the oldest of the Christmas festivals and originally the most important. Also known as the “twelfth night of Christmas,” Epiphany is traditionally celebrated in honor of Christ’s birth, of the adoration of the Magi, and of the baptism of Christ -- three manifestations of the Lord’s divinity.
Because the Magi came from the Orient, many of the traditional foods served on this day are spicy. Spice cake is often baked for dessert, and entrees may include curry powder or other pungent spices.
Another custom of Epiphany is the blessing of the home:

    A BLESSING FOR A HOME
    Blessed are you, our God,
bright artist of this planet’s rich diversity.
By the light of every star
you brought together strangers and seekers
to be fashioned anew as family and friends.
You have given us this dwelling
that we mark with the cross of your Son
and make into a hearth warmed with affection,
    a haven radiant with hospitality.
As we strive to adorn our home with love
in the dawn of this new year,
stir up in us also a longing to open wide its doors,
that all who seek may find here, in this family,
the welcome of Jesus who is Lord for ever and ever.
    Amen.

RESPECT LIFE
While of course the task of each person [in building a culture of life] will differ according to his or her station in life, all are charged with some basic, crucial responsibilities. These include prayer and personal conversion to the good news about the sacredness of human life. Fasting and prayer, in fact, are called “the first and most effective weapons against the forces of evil.” We are called to adopt a life-style which clearly communicates the primacy of “being” over “having”; one that makes room for the embrace of those who need us, not merely those we choose.
