BAPTISM
OF THE LORD
January 12/13, 2008

What does justice mean to you in your life? In the life of your parish? In the life of our nation?

Gospel Reflection (Matthew 3:13-17): Why did Jesus insist that John baptize him in the Jordan River? Jesus had no sin to be washed away, no need to repent. But Jesus had a great need to cooperate with God’s plan of salvation. And that plan required that he identify totally with the people he had come to save.

Discussion Points for Gospel:
Note that Jesus does not contradict John when he says, “I should be baptized by you!”
In a very real way, John was right. However, Jesus only says, “Give in for now.” Jesus had a bigger plan in mind, and he was asking John to cooperate by laying aside his own way of thinking “for now.” Does God ever ask you to “give in” on smaller issues?
What is your response? How do you decide whether to “give in” or not? When it is important to you to be “right” and when can you lay aside your own way of thinking in order to let God’s bigger plan unfold?
By our Baptism, we were given a share in Christ’s life and ministry. He shares his identity with us. How will you live as another Christ, so that God will say of you, “This is my beloved, on whom my favor rests”?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Baptism of the Lord

Today’s Gospel reading reveals to us the mysterious beauty of beginning anew with Christ. This fresh start calls for us to make changes in our lives so that we can focus more on Christ who strengthens us in all things.

Adults: When I am faced with the difficult need to change, how does my faith in Jesus strengthen me to begin anew?

Children: What can I do this week to start my day by focusing on God?

NATIONAL VOCATION AWARENESS WEEK
Today we celebrate the feast of the Baptism of the Lord. This week, January 13-18, is National Vocation Awareness Week, a special time in which the Church prays for the renewal and strengthening of vocations of dedicated people as married and single people, men to serve as priests, deacons, brothers, and women as religious sisters. For more information, check out the website at
www.usccb.org and click on the department link; from there, go to vocations. Or you can access information at www.nccv-vocations.org/
BAPTISM OF THE LORD
Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Baptism of Our Lord. This brings to an end the season of Christmas.
Jesus’ public life begins with his baptism by John in the Jordan. The Baptist hesitates, but Jesus insists and receives baptism. Then the Holy Spirit, in the form of a dove, comes upon Jesus and a voice from heaven proclaims, ‘This is my beloved Son.’

NEWMAN COMMUNITY
The group celebrated the new year with a “welcome back” event this past week. Come to the Parish Center this Wednesday, 7:00 p.m. The topic will be service.

RESPECT LIFE
“The Old and New Testaments are filled with . . . passages extolling children as gift and blessing. It is disheartening, therefore, to see how far our culture has diverged from that view. . . .There was no confusion [in the story of Mary and Elizabeth] as to what and who nested under their mothers’ hearts. Yet, 2,000 years later, many well-educated people do not know--or claim they do not know--the truth about human life before birth.”
--Cardinal Justin Rigali of Philadelphia
