- THE SECOND SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
January 13/14, 2007
-
- How does your parish support married
couples commitment? How do you?
- Gospel Reflection (John
2:1-11): The Old Testament reading today celebrates the marriage
of Israel with the Lord. In the gospel reading, Jesus and his
friends are taking part in a wedding celebration at Cana. Everyone
is having a grand old time until the wine runs out. Then Jesus,
in what is described as the first of his signs (miracles), turns
six jars of water into choice wine! Everyone is astonished. But
turning the water used for Jewish rituals into wine, Jesus gives
Gods people a sign that the Messiah has come. Later the
disciples would recognize Jesus as the Bridegroom of the Church,
the new people of God.
Discussion Points for Gospel: At this wedding celebration,
Jesus gave the wedding couple and guests the gift of choice wine!
He also gave them, and us, the gift of a deeper and fuller knowledge
of himself, who he really was. He revealed his glory, and
his disciples believed in him. What does this say about
the importance of celebrations in our lives? Jesus didnt
consider a wedding celebration to be beneath him.
He was there, fully present. What is our attitude toward family
celebrationsbirthdays, weddings, baptisms, or funerals?
How can we be more present to these happy or sad times together?
How can we use them as occasions to know one another better and
to encourage one another? (from Sadlier
We Believe)

- QUESTIONS OF THE
WEEK
- Second Sunday
in Ordinary Time
-
- With the
wedding feast of Cana, John begins to tell the story of Jesus
so that the reader can see how Jesus drew people to respond in
faith to the revelation of Gods glory. This revelation
shows the followers of Jesus that God is indeed active on the
earth and specifically can be seen in the person of Jesus and
in his life and ministry. While this miracle is important, what
is more telling is that by witnessing the changing of water into
wine, the disciples were led to believe in Christ.
-
- Adults: What helps me come to a deeper faith
in Christ?
-
- Children: What does the story of Cana teach
me about Jesus?

In the Roman Catholic Church, Ordinary Time
begins on the day following the Baptism of the Lord and continues
until Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of the Season
of Lent.
Ordinary Time resumes on the Monday following
Pentecost and continues through Saturday afternoon before the
first Sunday of Advent, some five or six months later. The last
Sunday before Advent is celebrated as the Solemnity of Christ
the King and in the Roman Catholic Church always takes the place
of the 34th Sunday in Ordinary Time. In the Roman Catholic Church,
the actual number of weeks of Ordinary Time in any given year
can total 33 or 34.
Green is the liturgical color of Ordinary Time.
The term Ordinary Time was first used with the liturgical reforms
which followed the Second Vatican Council. The reformed liturgical
calendar took effect on the first Sunday of Advent in 1969 (before
this there were two distinct seasons known as the season after
Epiphany and the season after Pentecost respectively). --from Wikipedia Encyclopedia NEWMAN COMMUNITY

who encouraged other disciples, especially his own brother Peter,
to follow Jesus.
