"Mission to Serve": New Orleans Diary

THE THIRD SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
January 20/21, 2007

What freedom does Jesus offer you today?
Gospel Reflection (Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21): Just as Ezra, in our first reading, read to the people from Scripture, Jesus reads from the book of the prophet Isaiah about the Servant of the Lord. He announces that he is the fulfillment of Scripture. Then he tells the crowd in the synagogue that he is the one sent by God. His presence is their guarantee that a “year of favor,” or time of salvation, has begun. All eyes are glued on him as he puts down the scroll and takes his seat.

Discussion Points for Gospel: Just as Ezra, in our first reading, read to the people from Scripture, Jesus reads from the book of the prophet Isaiah about the Servant of the Lord. He announces that he is the fulfillment of Scripture. Then he tells the crowd in the synagogue that he is the one sent by God. His presence is their guarantee that a “year of favor,” or time of salvation, has begun. All eyes are glued on him as he puts down the scroll and takes his seat.

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
THE THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Luke describes the beginning of Jesus’ mission in a different manner than the other three Evangelists. In Luke, Jesus begins by preaching his first sermon in Nazareth, wherein he roots his mission and ministry in the Scriptures, namely the prophet Isaiah. Scripture is preached, heard and prayed at each liturgy, but it must also be lived. Central to our faith, Scripture is to be proclaimed in word and deed.

Adults: How can I immerse myself in the Scriptures in order that they might become a living part of my life?

Children: What are my favorite stories
from the Bible, and what do they teach me?

RESPECT LIFE
In honor of Sanctity of Human Life Week, the Pregnancy Resource Center (PRC) would like to provide the community with a Memorial for the Unborn. The memorial would offer a place of hope and healing for those who have suffered the loss of a child through abortion, miscarriage or stillbirth. Athens Memory Gardens has graciously agreed to donate a site; however, the PRC must still raise approximately $1,000 to cover the costs involved with preparing the site and placing the marker. If you are interested in making a donation toward this valuable community resource, please contact the PRC directly at 592-4700. Donations may also be mailed to the PRC at 43A South Court St, Athens, 45701.

The PRC is currently looking for those volunteers who wish to show Christ’s love to women and families who may be struggling with a crisis pregnancy situation. Morning, afternoon, and evening shifts are available. If you would like a 2007 volunteer application, need more information, or are interested in assisting with volunteer training needs, please call the PRC at 592-4700.
ANDREW DINNERS -- VOCATIONS
These dinners are a opportunity for young men to gather together for dinner and to learn more about the lives of priests. They were created to encourage young men to consider a vocation to the priesthood and to answer any questions they may have. The name was inspired by Andrew, the apostle of Jesus, who encouraged other disciples, especially his own brother Peter, to follow Jesus.
There will be a dinner in Marietta on Thursday, January 25, from 6-8 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 312 Franklin Street. For more information, contact Father Marty.
