THE THIRD SUNDAY
OF ORDINARY TIME
January 24/25, 2009

When have you experienced the Kingdom of God?

Gospel Reflection (Mark 1:14-20): Today’s gospel reading recounts how Jesus calls his first disciples Simon and Andrew, James and John. His herald, John the Baptist, has been put in prison. Jesus urgently calls people to repent and believe in the good news. Like the Ninevites in the first reading, the four fishermen immediately respond to God’s call. They leave their boats and their nets in order to follow Jesus right on the spot. “I will make you fishers of men,” Jesus promises his new disciples. They take his words to heart and make following him their first priority in life.

Discussion Points for Gospel: What does Jesus call his first disciples and us to do? Are there things that might prevent us from hearing Jesus’ urgent call? What are they? Who or what can help us to put following Jesus first in our lives? What do you think Jesus means by the term “fishers of men”? Who do you know in your family, school, parish, or community that seems to be a fisher of men, women, or children? Explain what this person does and tell how you might try to follow this person’s example.

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
The Third Sunday of Ordinary Time

Often it is hard to believe that we can bring the good news of the Gospel to a world so fascinated by bad news and sensationalism. Yet, Jesus has sent us in his name to proclaim the love of God to all creation.

Adults: Have I ever felt like St. Paul, unworthy to be a messenger of the Gospel? What happened?

Children: How do I share with my friends my belief in the love of God for everyone?

FREEDOM OF CHOICE ACT (FOCA)
FOCA is a proposed federal law that, if enacted, will be the most radical abortion legislation in U.S. history and would establish a federal “fundamental” right to abortion. FOCA would strike down virtually all pro-life laws, including such common sense provisions as parental consent requirements, partial-birth abortion bans, and women’s right to know laws. It would also require taxpayer funding of abortions. In November, the full body of the U.S. bishops voted unanimously to support measures to prevent passage of FOCA.
The pro-life committee has authorized a postcard campaign as part of this effort. In this week’s bulletin we have postcards for you to take home, fill out and mail. Simply fill in the names (the addresses are already provided) of the senators and representative on the front of the post cards and be sure to sign your name and address on the back. Your help is urgently needed; please take action!
   Senators:
Sherrod Brown & George V. Voinovich
   Congressmen:
Zach Space (District 18) & Charlie Wilson (District 6)
For more information regarding FOCA, please check out either of the following websites: www.usccb.org/prolife/issues/abortion or www.nchla.org or contact Michele Santin at the Diocesan Office of Family and Social Concerns (740-282-3631).

ADULT CONFIRMATION - All Catholic college students and adults who have not celebrated the sacrament of Confirmation are encouraged to come to an informational meeting on Sunday, February 1st at 7:30 PM in the CTK Parish Center. Adult Confirmation will be celebrated in May, and the preparation process requires a few learning sessions, supplemented with individual and small group study, service experiences, interactions with sponsors, and retreats. “Come and see” if the time is right for you to be Confirmed.
THANK YOU FROM FR. TIM SHANNON
I want to thank everyone for the hospitality and welcome I received last weekend. It was a joy for me to share with you about vocations to the priesthood and religious life. I am very grateful to Fr. Holler for the invitation, and I continue to ask your prayers for this important ministry. Please feel free to contact me, particularly if you or someone you know might be discerning a vocation, at Fr. Timothy J. Shannon, Holy Name House of Formation, 411 South Fifth Street, Steubenville, 43952. My phone is 740-282-0646, and the email address is diosteubhof@sbcglobal.net.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS - There are no classes today or Tuesday; please plan to attend Vespers with the Bishop at St. Paul’s Church today at 4:00 pm.

YOU ARE INVITED! All young women and young men involved in Scouting programs: the Diocese of Steubenville is celebrating Scout Sunday, February 22, at St. Mary Church, Marietta at the 12:00 noon Mass. All Scouting participants and their adult leaders are invited to wear their uniform to this Mass as we honor the role of Scouts in the character formation of our youth. There will be a reception immediately following the Mass. RSVP by February 16 to smolloy@diosteub.org or 740-282-3631, ext. 151
The NEWMAN COMMUNITY meets Wednesdays at 7:00 in the CTK Parish Center. This week’s topic is “Apologetics.” Please join us!
LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
Recessional

Following the dismissal is a recessional, led by the ministers, and ultimately completed by the dispersal of the entire community. Music generally accompanies this action, although music is not part of the “official” liturgy. It is not in the books. It is something which has been added, probably because it makes the liturgy feel more finished and gives the assembly a good, uplifting feeling as they leave. Because we are dismissed at the end of mass, sent forth to take what we have received and what we have become into the world, it is important to wait until the end of mass. We are a community formed by the Word and by the Eucharist, and so we remain together and leave as a community, after the ministers have led the procession down the middle aisle. Then as we leave, we are part of that one procession into the world.

PRAYERS FOR THE SICK
Let's be one in hope and prayerful presence to all on our prayer list and continue to pray for Kathi Hahn, Donna Hart, Don Dillinger, and Bill Rader.
(Remembered in the petitions)
RESPECT LIFE - When does a new human life begin? When is there a new living organism of the human species, distinct from mother and father and ready to develop and mature if given a nurturing environment? While ancient thinkers had little verifiable knowledge to help them answer this question, today the science of embryology confirms beyond a doubt that a new human life begins at conception.

PEACE AND JUSTICE COMMITTEE -    Please attend the Town Hall Meeting - Thursday, Jan. 29, at 6:30pm at the Athens Community Center. The City and overlapping County Plans will be discussed. This is an opportunity for us to help steer government in the direction of the Common Good.
Action is needed on behalf of Jeffrey Hill and Brett Hartmann sentenced to die in Ohio. For assistance in drafting your letter, contact Julia Przybysz at the Intercommunity Justice and Peace Center, at 513-579-8574, or by email to julie@jjpc-cincinnati.org.
Both Brett and Jeff desperately need your help. Please write asking for a recommendation of clemency and for the governor to grant clemency. (Gov. Ted Strickland, Riffe Center, 30th Floor, 77S. High Street, Columbus, 43215, or the Ohio Parole and Pardon Board: Attn. Cynthia B. Mausser, 770 West Broad Street, Columbus, 43222.)
These men also represent the flaws so deeply imbedded in the capital punishment system. Jeff’s case reminds us all that those voices who should matter most are heard the least. Brett’s case highlights misconduct, false-testimony and the irreversible harm we do by executing the innocent.
COLLEGE DAY - On Monday, February 16, the Josephinum and the Office of Vocations will host a College Day for young men who are juniors or seniors in high school and who would like to know more about seminary life. The schedule includes a tour of the campus, discussions, meals, and prayer time with the college seminarians, attendance at classes and time for swimming and recreation. There is no charge for College Day. For further information, please call Rev. Timothy Shannon, Director of Vocations, 740-282-0646.
WORLD MARRIAGE DAY will be celebrated on Sunday, February 8. This day was established to honor the husband and wife as head of the family, the basic unit of society. Check out the web site for materials to help celebrate WMD: wmd.wwme.org/downloads
MARRIAGE PREPARATION - Couples planning marriage in the Catholic church in the next year must attend a form of marriage preparation, engaged encounter or engaged retreat. CTK will hold marriage preparation on Friday, March 13, AND Friday/Saturday, April 17/18. Please contact the office, 592-2711, to make an appointment to fill out registration paperwork.
MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER - Attend the February 13-15 Marriage Encounter Weekend at the Cambria Suites in Green, Ohio. Call 330-305-9963 or email worldwideme@sbcglobal.net for more information or reservations. Visit the website at www.wwme.org
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS NEWS - the Fr. Patala Council’s February meeting has been cancelled. The council will meet for the scheduled March meeting at the council hall, 169 Mill Street, at 7:00 p.m. on March 1st. A Work Day to be help during Spring Break will be planned.
