Statement for Triumph of the Cross Cathedral
FOURTH SUNDAY
OF ORDINARY TIME
February 2/3, 2008

Who comes to your mind as you read the Beatitudes? How might you imitate their blessedness?

Gospel Reflection (Matthew 5:1-12): Can you imagine a series of commercials telling people that the way to be truly happy is to be hungry for justice, poor in spirit, and single-hearted? Viewers might well wonder where these strange messages are coming from. These and the other happiness guidelines, or Beatitudes, come from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. He wants his disciples to walk the path of littleness, of mercy, and of forgiveness.
The Beatitudes are a great challenge and an even greater promise of reward. If we live by them, we will be happier right now as well as in eternity.

Discussion Points for Gospel:
Jesus knew that life, perhaps especially life as a Christian, could be difficult. He knew that there were things to be sorrowing about, that people needed mercy, that conflicts and persecutions would come. In all of these situations, Jesus tells us, we are blest. And, if we are merciful, try to make peace, and try to be holy, we will be consoled and rewarded not with riches, or power, or influence but by God, by joy, by peace. Do we want this reward? Would we rather have riches or power? How can we open ourselves to God, joy, and peace? (--Sadlier “We Believe” www.webelieve.web.com)

THROAT BLESSING
This Sunday, February 3, we celebrate the Feast of St. Blaise. We will bless throats after all Masses this weekend.
Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The eight beatitudes of Jesus are sometimes called the Magna Carta of the kingdom of God. They describe the qualities which are to characterize God’s reign. God is always at work establishing those qualities in our world and in us.

Adults: Which qualities in the beatitudes am I most in need of?

Children: How often do I ask God to help me become a better person?

• Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two small meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one’s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted.
“The season of lent is preparation for the celebration of Easter...it also prepares the faithful, who recall their baptism and do penance in preparation for Easter.”
(General Norms for the Liturgical Year, #2)

LENTEN RESOURCES
Lenten prayer materials are available in the Gathering Space in church. There are materials for young children as well as for adults and families.
Habitat for Humanity Project: this is our parish almsgiving effort and is such a worthwhile project to help people live in decent housing. Please take home one of the Lenten folders for this project. Surely a $20 offering is something within the means of nearly every household in the parish. And as we contribute our money, we also have the opportunity to not only pray for the poor but to commit ourselves to working toward a more just and equitable society.

NEWMAN COMMUNITY
Newman meets every Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. Join us!
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS NEWS

LITURGY BITS & BYTES
 Epiclesis
This word, which doesn’t find its way into our daily conversation very often, means the “calling down upon“ or “invocation.” This is one of the most important parts of the liturgy. It calls down the power of the Holy Spirit for the consecration. In our name, the priest, with the authority given him by the Church through ordination, invokes the power of the Holy Spirit. This has always been part of the Eucharistic Prayer. In the Eastern rite, this is actually seen as the part that is the consecration.

WHY CATHOLIC?
Christ the King and St. Paul’s parishes are continuing the program this Spring. This Lent instead of giving up something, let God give you a gift. Join a small group, and reflect on the Catholic understanding of conscience development centering on our freedom and responsibility, conscience, virtues, moral laws and grace this Lent.
Sign up after Mass this weekend or call the Reddans at 594-8591. If you are already a part of a small group, there is no need to complete a new sign up card unless you want to change groups. Simply contact your small group leader. The six-week sessions will begin the week of February 10 and continue through the week of March 16. This season’s book is Christian Prayer: Deepening My Experience of God.
SCOUT SUNDAY
On Sunday, February 24, the Diocese of Steubenville will celebrate Scout Sunday. The diocesan Catholic Committee on Scouting would like to bring together all Catholic Cubs, Scouts and their families with the 11:30 St. Mary Parish Mass celebrated by Bishop Conlon in St. Clairsville. A reception for scouts and their families will follow in the social hall. All Scouts, Cubs and adult leaders are invited to wear their uniform to Mass as we honor the role of scouts in the character formation of our youth. Call or email Susan Molloy with number attending (740-282-3631, ext 151; smolloy@diosteub.org).
It’s not too late for a . . . PILGRIMAGE TO QUEBEC
Bishop Conlon invites you to attend the 49th International Eucharistic Congress in Quebec this June. We will travel by motorcoach to Quebec where we will spend four days being immersed in Eucharistic topics, Masses and processions. On our travels to and from, we will also stop at pilgrimage sites. Consider going; it will be an experience of a lifetime. Call Fr. Morris at 740-732-4129 or email him at wmorris@diosteub.org
