"Mission to Serve": New Orleans Diary

THE FIFTH SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
February 3/4, 2007

Who inspires you to “leave everything” and follow Jesus?
Gospel Reflection (Luke 5:1-11): We can be sure that Peter remembered the scene in today’s gospel story as clearly as Isaiah recalled his own vision of God. Even though Simon is convinced that there are no fish available, he tells Jesus, “At your command, I will lower the nets.” His trust is rewarded not only by a huge catch of fish, but by Jesus’ call to become a disciple. Peter, James, and John, overwhelmed by the presence of Jesus, drop everything and follow Him.

Discussion Points for Gospel: For Peter, this catch was a wonderful surprise. He was so overwhelmed that he said to Jesus, in effect, “This is too much! I shouldn’t be hanging around with someone like you!” When have you been wonderfully surprised by God? How did you feel? When Jesus says, “Do not be afraid,” he is preparing Peter for what is to come. “You think this is something?” Jesus could have said. “What until you see all the good we can do for God’s people!” So Peter left everything and became a disciple.
You are a disciple. How can you “leave everything” to follow Jesus in prayer and service this week?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
THE FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Today's Gospel reading from Luke describes how Jesus called Peter to be his disciple. We can identify easily with Peter's first reaction ("Who, me? No, no. I'm not worthy."), but the call remains. None of us ever feels "worthy" to be specially chosen by the Lord to share in his sacred mission. Yet we are.

Adults: What is it, at the deepest level of my being, that I sense Jesus is asking of me as one of his disciples?

Children: How is Jesus asking me to be his follower this week?

Christ the King and St. Paul’s parishes are continuing the program. This Lent instead of giving up something, let God give you a gift. Join a small group, and reflect on the Catholic understanding of conscience development centering on our freedom and responsibility, conscience, virtues, moral laws and grace during Lent. Sign up after Mass this weekend, February 3-4, or next weekend, February 10-11, or call Mary and Pat Reddan at 740-594-8591. If you are already a part of a small group, there is no need to complete a new sign up card unless you want to change groups. Simply contact your small group leader. The six-week session will begin the week of February 25 and continue through the week of April 1, 2007. This season’s book is The Life in Christ: Walking with God.

RESPECT LIFE
The Pregnancy Resource Center (PRC) would like to provide the community with a Memorial for the Unborn. The memorial will offer a place of hope and healing for those who have suffered the loss of a child through abortion, miscarriage or stillbirth. Athens Memory Gardens has graciously agreed to donate a site; the PRC must still raise approximately $1,000 to cover costs involved with preparing the site and placing the marker. If you would like to make a donation toward the memorial, please contact the PRC at 592-4700 or mail them to the PRC at 43A South Court St, Athens, 45701.
The PRC is in need of volunteers who wish to show Christ’s love to women and families who may be struggling with a crisis pregnancy situation. Morning, afternoon, and evening shifts are available. If you would like a volunteer application, need more information, or are interested in assisting with volunteer training needs, please call the PRC at 592-4700.
