THE SIXTH SUNDAY
OF ORDINARY TIME
February 14/15, 2009

Who or what needs healing in your community?

Gospel Reflection (Mark 1:40-45): Today’s story describes a man who is so excited and happy that he has to tell everyone he meets what has happened to him. The man with leprosy firmly believed that Jesus could cure him and he begged Jesus to do so. Moved with pity, Jesus stretched out his hand, touched the afflicted man, and said, “Be cured.” And the man’s deformities were immediately healed.
Although Jesus instructed him to speak only to the priest about his cure, the man could not restrain himself. He told so many people that Jesus had to retreat to the desert to avoid the crowds who followed him everywhere.
Discussion Points for Gospel: When you feel especially blessed by God, what do you do about it? How do you share your feelings about your experiences of God’s love and his healing power?
When you see people in terrible need on TV newscasts or in the newspapers, are you moved with pity for them? What do you do about it?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
The Sixth Sunday of Ordinary Time

Today’s Gospel calls us to reflect not only on how our society shuns people, but it also challenges us to look into our own hearts and ask ourselves, Who have we been afraid to welcome?

Adults: Who are today’s “lepers” that society fears? What is a Christian response to this?

Children: What is my favorite story about Jesus healing someone?

BAPTISM - We welcome with great joy Jackson Myles Broka, newly-born today through the waters of Baptism! He is the son of Julie Sparhawk and Bryon Broka.
LIFT HIGH THE CROSS
To you, O Lord, we lift our hearts.

in your truth,
For you are God, our Savior.
For you we wait all the day.
Amen.
--adapated from Psalm 25

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
 Baptism -- Private

Every once in awhile, a couple preparing for the baptism of their child will say, “We would like a ‘private’ baptism.” The response is, “There is no such thing.” Baptism is by its nature a public sacrament and so it should be celebrated as such. It is a statement that we are choosing that this child become part of a faith community as well as live according to a particular church tradition.

RESPECT LIFE - There is a nationwide effort to pass laws requiring abortion providers to offer a woman the opportunity to view an ultrasound image of her unborn child. One physician states, “Allowing a patient to view her ultrasound examination implies respect for the dignity and autonomy of a patient, and her ability to participate wisely in her own plan of care.”
