THE SEVENTH SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME

February 17/18, 2007

How has God’s mercy enabled you to show mercy to others?
Gospel Reflection (Luke 6:27-38): In today’s gospel, Jesus says those “three little words” that make being a Christian a true challenge: “Love your enemies.” The followers of Jesus must do more than be kind to their friends. Even sinners can do that much! Jesus challenges us to realize our potential as sons and daughters of God. We have the power to turn the other cheek, to lend without expecting repayment, to give generously to those who take advantage of us. Jesus does not pretend that it is easy to love our enemies. But he requires us to keep trying, to keep growing into fully mature Christians who can change the world by the power of love.

Discussion Points for Gospel: It has been said that maturity is measured by the willingness to give. How mature are you? How willing are you to give compassion? Non-judgmental acceptance? Forgiveness? How willing are you to give these to your friends? How willing are you to give these to those you do not know well or do not consider friends? It is often easy to reject or make fun of people we do not know at all. Sometimes, in the mall or on the streets, we see people who are different from us in some way. Some may think that, as long as they can’t hear us or don’t know us personally, we can think or say whatever we want about others. What does Jesus teach us in this gospel? How can we put it into practice even with those people we do not know personally?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
THE SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

As startling as Jesus' words were for the disciples in today's Gospel, they discover that it is possible to live with such radical love, even for enemies and sinners. They learn this because Jesus not only taught them this way of life in words, but they witnessed him treating others with that same radical love. Even on the cross he was able to cry out, "Father, forgive them."

Adults: What makes it hard for me to show God's mercy to others?

Children: How does it feel when someone forgives me?
