THE SEVENTH SUNDAY
OF ORDINARY TIME
February 21/22, 2009

When do you find praying easy? Difficult?

Gospel Reflection (Mark 2:1-12): Four friends of a paralyzed man in today’s gospel story prove that “Perseverance pays off.” Jesus is surrounded by such a crowd that the only way to reach him is through the roof. The friends lower the man through a hole in the roof and deposit him on a mat at the feet of Jesus. Their efforts are rewarded when Jesus not only heals the man but also forgives his sins.
The religious authorities accuse Jesus of blasphemy because God alone can forgive sins. But Jesus assures them that he “has authority to forgive sins on earth.” They are temporarily silenced. The crowd, however, loudly praises God for Jesus’ healing power.

Discussion Points for Gospel: How have you sometimes used your imagination and your skills to help others? Who has helped you in a way that you will always remember? Why is it important for followers of Jesus never to give up on trying to help others?
Why do you think Jesus forgave the man’s sins before he healed his body? If you had been there, what might you have said to the authorities who criticized Jesus?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
The Seventh Sunday of Ordinary Time

Most of Jesus’ healings take place because of the faith of the sick person. Today’s Gospel is different. Here the healing takes place because of the faith of the friends of the paralyzed man. Jesus saw their faith and healed the man.

Adults: What might I do to carry a friend or family member closer to Christ?

Children: How do my actions of love show God’s love to others?

 Baptism -- Into the Community

Baptism is the sacrament of incorporation into a faith community. All the signs and symbols that surround the pouring of water speak of belonging. It is because of this that many parishes require parents to be registered members of the parish before their child’s baptism. Having a child baptized in this church is making the statement that this is where you intend to nurture the faith life of yourself and your child.

(Remembered in the petitions)
REST IN PEACE - We offer our sympathy and prayers to the Rodgers family. Pauline’s niece, Suzanne Berman, died last weekend. May she and all who have died, rest in the peace of our Lord.
RESPECT LIFE - The framers of the Declaration of Independence asserted that all human beings have inalienable rights, bestowed on them not by any human power, but by their Creator. Those who hold a more exclusionary view need to explain why we should divide humanity into those who have moral value and those who do not. This moral line-drawing poses a serious threat to the dignity and rights of other poor and vulnerable members of the human family who need and deserve our respect and protection.
