Statement for Triumph of the Cross Cathedral
THIRD SUNDAY
OF LENT
February 23/24, 2008

The Samaritan woman immediately asks for the water Jesus offers. For what do you need to ask him?

Gospel Reflection (John 4:5-15, 19-26, 39, 40-42): In this wonderful story from John’s Gospel, Jesus gives the Samaritan woman at the well the “living water” of truth. A foreigner, she is hospitable to Jesus and honest with him. In return, he chooses to reveal to her the truth about his identity. The woman rushes off to tell everyone the good news that the Messiah has come. And she is so convincing that the Samaritans come to believe in Jesus on her word.

Discussion Points for Gospel:
So many people are searching for and “thirsting for” the right answers to life’s questions. Will you share with them the “living water” of truth that you have received from Jesus? How?    The living water reminds us again of Baptism. The living waters are the fountains of eternal life within us. We are reminded of this at funerals. At the door of the church, the priest sprinkles holy water on the coffin and says, “In the waters of Baptism, N.(name) died with Christ and rose with him to new life. May he/she now share with him eternal glory.” How does holy water remind you of Baptism? When do you use holy water? (--Sadlier “We Believe” www.webelieve.web.com)

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Third Sunday of Lent

From its improbable beginning when Jesus asks for a drink, the conversation in today’s Gospel was always in danger of breaking down. At any time the suspicion between Samaritans and Jews could undermine the encounter. The woman, however, keeps talking. Her willingness to do so lead to her faith in Jesus as Savior of the world

Adults: Have I ever grown from a conversation with someone who disagreed with me? What does such an experience tell me of God’s grace?

Children: How can I learn from those who think differently than I do?

FISH FRY
Each Friday a Fish Fry will be held at the CTK PC from 5-7. Catholic organizations from St. Paul and CTK will host the event during Lent.
The menu includes fish, a vegetable, coleslaw and a roll. The cost is $5/plate. Donations accepted. Take out available.
This Friday, February 29, the event will again be sponsored by the Newman Community. Food is catered by the Red Brick Tavern courtesy Dan DeLuca.
Stations of the Cross and Benediction

LENT: THE TERMS
Lent is an Anglo-Saxon word meaning “spring.” The season lasts from Ash Wednesday until the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, often observed by receiving a cross of ashes on the forehead at Mass.
Holy Week includes the days from Palm Sunday through Easter.
Palm or Passion Sunday has contrasting names, one because of Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem (to the waving palm branches), the other because this Sunday begins Jesus’ days of suffering and death.
Paschal Triduum, from the Latin for “three days,” extends from evening Holy Thursday through Easter Sunday.
Maundy Thursday (Holy Thursday) gets its name from Jesus’ “new commandment” (mandatum in Latin), to love one another, which he spoke during the Passover meal when he washed his disciples’ feet and instituted the Holy Eucharist.
Good Friday marks the events of Jesus’ trial, crucifixion, death and burial, sometimes with special Tre Ore (three-hour) observances. The altar is stripped of all decoration and the church darkened until Saturday’s Easter Vigil.
Easter Vigil is celebrated on Holy Saturday evening after sundown; traditionally a time for baptizing, confirming and receiving new members.
Easter, named after an ancient spring festival, is the “great Sunday,” on which each Sunday Eucharist is modeled.
Fasting, Abstinence, Almsgiving, Self-denial and Penance refer to the Christian practice of intentionally giving one’s time, energy and possessions for others, especially the needy, as Christ gave himself for us.

SACRED HEART RETREAT HOUSE
“What is Levi’s Whole Story?” is the theme for our Senior Citizen Day of Reflection at Sacred Heart Retreat House on Tuesday, March 4, from 10:00 till 2:00. All are welcome. Please call 740-667-0100 to register.
ST. FRANCIS SOCIETY
We will celebrate First Friday Mass on March 7 at 12:00 noon followed by a soup luncheon. A Master Gardener from the Extension Office will speak about gardening for seniors.
LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
The Institution Narrative is the part that retells the story of the last supper. It is, in fact, a narrative. This is the part that the Western Church generally regards as the consecration. An interesting note, however, is that some of the Eucharistic Prayers in the early Church did not include the institution narrative. As the theology of the Eucharist develops, a number of theologians now describe the entire prayer as consecratory. The important thing is that the consecration occurs through the power of the Holy Spirit, invoked by the presider, who, through ordination, has been given the authority to act in the name of the assembled community, the Church.
