SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT
February 27/28, 2010

What role does silence play in your Lenten journey?

Gospel Reflection: (Luke 9:28b-36) Wouldn’t it be wonderful to see your best friend transformed, or turned into his or her glorified self, right before your eyes? That’s the kind of experience Peter, James, and John have in today’s gospel. While they are up on a mountain with Jesus, they have a splendid vision of him in his glorified body. They see him talking with Moses and Elijah, two long-dead figures from the Old Testament. Moses represents the Law, while Elijah represents the prophets. In Jesus, both find the fulfillment of God’s plan of salvation.
Discussion Points: The disciples are awed when the voice of God confirms Jesus’ identity: “This is my Son, my Chosen One.” How will you honor Jesus as the Chosen One of God during Lent?
Three traditional ways are: daily prayer, fasting, and sharing with the poor (almsgiving). How can you include these three Lenten practices into your daily life?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Second Sunday of Lent

Only Luke has the three disciples in a semi-sleep, a reminder of their sleep later in the Garden of Gethsemane. Far too often we sleepwalk through out days and fail to see the world we encounter with the eyes of faith.
Adults: How has the cross -- suffering -- become a source of faith in my life?

Children: Why is faith so important in my life?

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
  Annunciation

On March 25 we celebrate the Feast of the Annunciation. Nine months before the Nativity, we celebrate the Annunciation of the Angel Gabriel to Mary, and Jesus’ incarnation. Mary is intimately associated with this event, which will make her the Mother of God, but it is the Word made flesh who is at the center of the celebration. The incarnation sums up God’s loving plan for us. The moment when the Son of God became man in the womb of the Virgin Mary, the promise of God to Israel came true and the hopes of all peoples were realized. This is the feast that begins the whole process of redemption. As a way of acknowledging this central mystery of our faith, the liturgy of the day directs us to genuflect during the creed at the words, “By the power of the Holy Spirit, he was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man.”

Then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my chosen Son; listen to him.”
