Statement for Triumph of the Cross Cathedral
FIFTH SUNDAY
OF LENT
March 8/9, 2008
Jesus’ question to Martha is echoed each time we renew our Baptismal promises. Do you believe?

Gospel Reflection (John 11:1-45): Those of us who have lost a beloved family member or friend know how Martha and Mary must have felt. Their brother Lazarus died. And Jesus did not protect them from the pain of mourning. In fact, Jesus wept, too, and was deeply troubled. But death is never the end of the story for Jesus or those who believe in him.
“I am the resurrection and the life,” Jesus tells Martha. At Jesus’ command, Lazarus, all bound up in burial wrappings, slowly emerges from the tomb. What a scene that must have been! And what a promise to us!

Discussion Points for Gospel:
This story is seen as a foretaste of the resurrection of Jesus, and of our own resurrection, too. During the weeks of Lent, we are preparing to celebrate resurrection. Do you see any “foretastes of resurrection joy” around you? In nature? In the love of your family and friends? In the care and concern of neighbors? In your own heart? If you do, you will be following in the footsteps of Jesus and all the saints. These signs of resurrection may not be as dramatic as Lazarus’ rising from the dead, but they are just as real. How many do you experience? Keep looking for them this week! (--Sadlier “We Believe” www.webelieve.web.com)

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Fifth Sunday of Lent

The challenge of faith is to believe not in things which can be demonstrated, but to believe even when no proof can be found. Jesus calls Martha to believe that her brother will live now, even as he lies in the tomb. We are asked to believe even when evidence is lacking.

Adults: When is a time I found life, even in the presence of death? What life do I need to claim today?

Children: How often do I stop to remember that God loves me in each moment?

CHILDREN’S EASTER CHOIR
Practice is 3:45-4:25 pm on Sundays: March 9 and 16*. *Practice on the 16th will be held in the PC Chapel. We will be singing for the 10:30 Mass on Easter. Questions, contact Nancy Sand, 592-3410.
EASTER FLOWER MEMORIALS
Please send or bring your memorial to the office no later than March 17 for inclusion in the Easter bulletin.
KROGER CARDS: Use of Kroger cards last month brought a $1,000.78 check to the Religious Education program. Please continue to use your Kroger Cards.

MINISTERS: anyone interested in ministering during Holy Week services should contact Nancy Sand at 592-3410 or by email: nsand@ctkathens.org
ATTENTION LITURGICAL MINISTERS: Nancy is working on the Spring Quarter schedule which will be in effect March 29/30 through June 14/15. Please contact her with dates you CANNOT minister.

LENTEN COMMUNAL RECONCILIATION SERVICE
Next Sunday, March 16th at 3PM we will have a reconciliation service in the CTK Church which will include reflections on the icon “Jesus Christ Holy Forgiveness,” a community “chain of forgiveness” activity, and the opportunity to experience the sacrament of reconciliation.
All community members are also invited to a Lenten Community event from 2-3 PM at the CTK parish center where we will use fire and other physical rituals to deepen our understanding of sin and mercy.
VESPERS - We would like to begin celebrating Vespers (Evening Prayer) once a week. There will be an organizational meeting this Sunday, March 9, at 5:15 PM in the chapel at St. Paul’s. For more information call Scott Carson at 592-6611.

CATHOLIC LADIES OF COLUMBIA will meet Monday, March 10, 6:30 pm in the CTK Parish Center.
LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
The Anamnesis is a word that does not translate too well into English. We say remembrance or remembering, but the meaning goes beyond that. It means remembering that which has happened in the past, but which is effective and real in our lives in the present. “Calling to mind the death your Son endured for our salvation, his glorious resurrection and ascension into heaven…” We remember, and we celebrate the present reality.
