"Mission to Serve": New Orleans Diary

THIRD SUNDAY IN LENT
March 10/11, 2007

What “cultivating” do you need to do in order to
bear fruit as Jesus’ disciple?
Gospel Reflection (Luke 13:1-9) Sometimes when we see a terrible accident or hear about people who are being persecuted, we may think that such things will never happen to us. Some people in Jesus’ time believed that those who suffered such tragedies and injustices were being punished because they were great sinners. Jesus sets them straight in today’s gospel reading. He says that suffering comes from injustice in our world.
Discussion Points for Gospel:
The season of Lent doesn’t last forever. We need to turn toward God’s reign right away if we are to truly celebrate Easter. How will you show that you have heard Jesus’ words about reforming your life?
The parable of the fig tree reminds us that God is patient, too. He is willing to help us, as the man was willing to give the tree extra help so that it would grow. How do you need God to help you in order to change your life for the better? If God gives you another year of life, what do you want to be like a year from now? (from Sadlier “We Believe”)

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
THIRD SUNDAY IN LENT

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said to his disciples, "Are grapes gathered from thorns, or figs from thistles? In the same way, every good tree bears good fruit." (Mt 7:16-17)

Adults: What do my words and actions, the fruits of my decisions, reveal about how I am living for the kingdom.

Children: What will I do this week that shows I am a follower of Jesus Christ?

LENTEN LUNCHES

Please join us after the daily 12:15 Mass for a light soup lunch and fellowship in the Parish Center.
We really need volunteers to make and bring their favorite soup to share during Lent. There is a sign-up sheet posted in the kitchen.
**During Lent, daily Mass will only be at 12:15; there will not be a 5:15 Mass.
SOUP SUPPER & STATIONS OF THE CROSS

On the Fridays of Lent, we will offer a light soup supper at 5:30 p.m. in the Parish Center and then have Stations of the Cross and Benediction at 6:00 p.m. in church. Volunteers are needed to provide soup for these suppers. Sign up on the sheet posted in the kitchen.

CHILDREN’S EASTER CHOIR
Practices for the 10:30 Easter Sunday Mass choir are Friday evenings March 16, 23 and 30, from 7:00-8:00 and Saturday, April 7, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Children must be able to read and should attend at least 2 of the practices. Call Nancy Sand, 592-3410, or email her at nsand@ctkathens.org for more information.
For BUSY Families
With so many demands on our time, it can be difficult to get the whole family together for quality time. Yet there is nothing more important that we can do for our children. Try these ideas for finding more family time.
Pick one event on your weekly schedule that you can do without and replace it with family time.
Pick a kids’ television show or video game that you secretly like and share it regularly with your child.
Work on the family checkbook or work from your job at the same time and in the same room with your children as they do homework.
Get everyone up 15 minutes earlier and have breakfast as a family.
Wash dinner dishes or do another chore together.
Turn off the TV, computers, iPods and video games and take a walk.
Go on a school field trip with each of your children.
Go to Mass as a family.

PEACE & JUSTICE MINISTRY QUOTES
Whatever may be the tensions and the stresses of a particular day, there is always lurking close at hand the trailing beauty of forgotten joy or unremembered peace.
- Howard Thurman, from Meditations of the Heart.

Mid-Lent Review
As we approach the midpoint of Lent, we pause to look back at the opportunities of grace embraced and we look forward to persevering in this extended period of spiritual renewal to the end. Please take some moments to reflect on how Lent has been going for you (and your family, and your small groups)
The parish is providing many opportunities to live in the spirit of Lent:
¨ Daily Mass: the Eucharist is the foundation of our spiritual life. Can you find time to share in the Eucharist one time during the week? Join in our Lenten soup lunch after mass and get to know better some of our community.
¨ Habitat for Humanity Project: this is our parish almsgiving effort. Such a worthwhile project: to help people live in decent housing. Have you taken home with you one of the Lenten folders for this project? Surely a $20 offering is something within the means of nearly every household in the parish. And as we contribute our money, we also have the opportunity to not only pray for the poor but to commit ourselves to working toward a more just and equitable society.
¨ Stations of the Cross: (6:00 pm on Fridays) it has been a while since the parish has had the opportunity to pray the stations together. We have had a good response thus far. It is surely an experience that would benefit families. Think about coming at least once for the stations which are followed by Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Also, there is the chance to share a simple soup supper at 5:30 in the Parish Center prior to the Stations.
¨ Parish Communal Penance Service: Reconciliation is at the heart of Lenten Renewal. Please mark your calendars now to attend the Penance Service on Palm Sunday (April 1) at 3:00 pm at CTK.
¨ Make plans to attend the Triduum: Holy Thursday, Good Friday, the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday all are part of one grand celebration of the Paschal Mysteries. Please plan on attending all of them.
¨ Pray for our RCIA candidates and catechumens. As they approach their final preparations encourage these men and women who are inspirations for us not only by prayer but by our acts of welcome and kindness.
