"Mission to Serve": New Orleans Diary

FOURTH SUNDAY IN LENT
March 17/18, 2007

Jesus welcomed sinners. Do you find this comforting or challenging? Why?
Gospel Reflection (Luke 15:1-3, 11-32) Religious people often criticized Jesus for eating and associating with sinners. But these people did not realize that everyone needs God’s mercy and love. In today’s gospel story, Jesus wants us to know what God’s mercy is like. When anyone sins and is sorry for that sin, God rushes out at top speed to embrace that person. Even when we feel that we may be undeserving of God’s love, Jesus tells us that God rejoices like the father in the gospel story.

   Discussion Points for Gospel:
Have you ever had the experience of being forgiven or “taken back” into your family or group of friends? Have you ever forgiven someone who really hurt you? (How did it feel to be acting so much like God?)
Consider the elder brother. Have you ever felt that someone else in your family or among your friends “has it better” or easier than you do? Are you tempted to compare yourself with others? Each child in a family is different. Sometimes, to meet each child’s needs, parents cannot treat each child the same. How did the father in this parable meet the needs of each of his sons? How does God meet your needs?
Pray: Jesus, during this Lenten season, help me to ask for forgiveness. Help me to forgive generously as God does. Help me to celebrate that I am God’s child. I do not have to compare myself with others. My needs are being met as God knows best. Amen.

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

"[W]e entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God" (2 Corinthians 5:20).

Adults: When I act like a prodigal child of God, how does my trust in God compare to that of the prodigal son's trust in his father?

Children: When I hurt someone, how quickly and sincerely do I say I am sorry?

MARRIAGE MOMENTS
St. Joseph is the patron saint of workers and foster parents. Value your spouse’s work today, whether it be paid or freely given for the good of the family. Have you ever considered being foster parents to a child in need?

MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER WEEKEND
Husbands, Wives, Celebrate the spring with new life in your relationship by loving one another as Jesus loves you. As married couples we are united in heart but too often separated by schedules, jobs, children’s activities, etc. Be that special couple that God calls you to be. Celebrate the “fullness of joy” in your marriage that God promises to all of his “beloved couples.” Attend a World Wide Marriage Encounter weekend April 20-22 in Streetsboro. Contact Tim & Lori at 330-305-9962 or email them at WorldwideME@aol.com. The web address is
www.wwme.org
RACHEL’S VINEYARD RETREAT
“The Church is aware of the many factors which may have influenced an abortion decision, and she does not doubt that in many cases it was a painful and even shattering decision. Certainly what happened was and remains terribly wrong; however the wound in the heart may not yet have healed” (Pope John Paul II, EV 99). If you know a person who has had an abortion, please let them know that a confidential, supportive Rachel’s Vineyard Retreat weekend for spiritual and emotional healing after an abortion will be held in the Steubenville area on April 27-29. For more information, please contact Sharon at 740-282-3636 or email at aimhelpcenter@sbcglobal.net You may also visit
www.rachelsvineyard.org or call the national hotline at 1-877-HOPE-4-ME.
I will get up and go to my Father and shall say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.

(Remembered in the petitions)

EASTER FLOWER MEMORIALS
We are accepting donations for the flowers used to decorate the church during the Easter season. Please send or bring your memorial to the office no later than March 30 for inclusion in the Easter bulletin.

RESPECT LIFE
Prenatal testing for some 450 diseases may seem to give couples more power, but it often actually takes choices away. Society’s demand for physical perfection places enormous pressure on couples to “conform to the norm” by aborting less-than-perfect children.
(Rev. Tadeusz Pacholcyzk, Ph.D., The Southern Cross, 8/17/06)

PEACE & JUSTICE MINISTRY QUOTES
...[W]hatever we do counts. If we do not serve what coheres and endures, we serve what disintegrates and destroys. -
Wendell Berry, excerpt from Wendell Berry’s essay “Two Economies.”
COUNSELING ASSISTANCE FUND
The Church is committed to helping those who have been harmed as a result of sexual abuse by representatives of the Church. According to mental health professionals, counseling is a vital component of the healing process for survivors of childhood sexual abuse. The Church recognizes, however, that there are people who are reluctant to contact us for help. This new Counseling Assistance Fund can help these individuals. If you would like more information, please go to the website at
www. counselingassistancefund.org
PARENTING POINTERS
“Dear God, please put another holiday between Christmas and Easter. There is nothing good in there now.” (Ginny) Maybe that’s why the Church has Laetare Sunday. Google it if you don’t know what it means.
