"Mission to Serve": New Orleans Diary

FIFTH SUNDAY IN LENT
March 24/25, 2007

What is the difference between being righteous and being self-righteous?
Gospel Reflection (John 8:1-11) Once again the scribes and Pharisees are trying to trap Jesus. They bring him a woman caught in the act of adultery. The Law of Moses requires that the adulteress should die. If Jesus does not agree, he will look like someone who does not respect the Law of Moses.
To the Pharisees’ amazement, Jesus at first ignores them. Then he stops them in their tracks with an unexpected challenge: “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” One by one the judges and critics drop their stones and drift away. Now that they recognize their own need for forgiveness, they are not ready to condemn someone else. Neither does Jesus condemn the woman. He simply requires her to turn away from sin. Now she has a chance for a new beginning.

   Discussion Points for Gospel:
Matthew’s gospel reflection does not say exactly what Jesus was writing in the sand. One tradition has it that he was writing down the sins of the people who were so willing to condemn the woman. Could Jesus have been writing something from Scripture? Could he have been writing a message to the crowd? What do you think he could have said?
When we say something about someone that puts them in the wrong and is untrue, we call it bearing false witness about someone. This is forbidden by the eighth commandment. When we spread the “bad news” about something wrong someone else has done, even though it is true, we commit the sin of scandal.

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
FIFTH SUNDAY IN LENT

Jesus asks the woman, "Has no one condemned you?" The woman replies, "No one, sir." Then Jesus, offering her divine forgiveness and freeing her from her sin, continues, "Neither do I condemn you. Go your way, and from now on do not sin again."

Adults: How often do I look at myself and ask, "What good am I capable of doing?"

Children: What will I do today to be kind to someone?

RACHEL’S VINEYARD RETREAT
“The Church is aware of the many factors which may have influenced an abortion decision, and she does not doubt that in many cases it was a painful and even shattering decision. Certainly what happened was and remains terribly wrong; however the wound in the heart may not yet have healed” (Pope John Paul II, EV 99). If you know a person who has had an abortion, please let them know that a confidential, supportive Rachel’s Vineyard Retreat weekend for spiritual and emotional healing after an abortion will be held in the Steubenville area on April 27-29. For more information, please contact Sharon at 740-282-3636 or email at aimhelpcenter@sbcglobal.net You may also visit

RESPECT LIFE
President Bush proclaimed Sunday, January 21, 2007 as National Sanctity of Human Life Day to help “foster a culture of life and reinforce our commitment to building a compassionate society that respects the value of every human being.” He pointed out that “One of our society’s challenges today is to harness the power of science to ease human suffering without sanctioning practices that violate the dignity of human life. With the right policies, we can continue to achieve scientific progress while living up to our ethical and moral responsibilities.”

PEACE & JUSTICE MINISTRY QUOTES
Because Jesus’ teachings are so challenging and radical, it is much more comfortable to focus on a quiet, private, personal relationship with him than it is to follow his teachings that call for a public prophetic witness. --Alvin Alexi Currier
MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER WEEKEND
Husbands and wives, celebrate the Spring with new life in your relationship by loving one another as Jesus loves you. As married couples we are united in heart but too often separated by schedules, jobs, children’s activities, etc. Be that special couple that God calls you to be. Celebrate the “fullness of joy” in your marriage that God promises to all of his “beloved couples.” Attend a World Wide Marriage Encounter weekend April 20-22 in Streetsboro. Contact Tim & Lori at 330-305-9962 or email them at WorldwideME@aol.com. The web address is
