FIFTH SUNDAY
OF LENT
March 28/29, 2009

What “falling” have you endured in order to “bear fruit” as a disciple?
Gospel Reflection (John 12:20-33): Here Jesus compares his life and ours with a grain of wheat. If the grain falls into the earth and dies, it then rises as a stalk of wheat that gives life by feeding others. Like the grain of wheat, we must be willing to lose our lives in order to gain eternal life.
Jesus knows that the hour of his death when he will be lifted up on the cross is coming soon. But he also knows that when he is lifted up, he will draw everyone, Jews and Greeks and all the world’s people, to himself.

Discussion Points for Gospel: In this gospel story, to lose your life means to lay down your attachments to anything or anyone that prevents you from following Jesus. For people your age in today’s world, what might some of those things and persons be? Who or what helps you to be a faithful follower of Jesus, not only during Lent but on a daily basis?
How do you think Jesus draws people to himself? How can you help others whose words or actions say “We should like to see Jesus”?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Fifth Sunday of Lent

The Gospel of John sees Jesus’ Death as a glorification. Today’s Gospel announces the beginning of that hour of glory. The image of the grain of wheat illustrates how the action of dying to self will lead to a triumphant future.
Adults: What actions of sacrifice in my life are producing lasting benefits for myself and others?

Children: Do I recognize the sacrifices others make for me? Do I thank them for their love?

2009 CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES COLLECTION
Give Hope to Jesus in Disguise

Thank you! Because of your generosity, the CRS Collection will be able to support disaster and emergency relief, refugee resettlement, advocacy, development and legal services for people in need all around the world. Together, we will restore hope to Jesus in disguise, who reminds us that Christ is present in those who suffer -- and in those who respond compassionately to their needs.
BISHOP WILL LEAD MINI-MISSION THIS WEEK
Bishop Conlon will be here in the deanery to present a two-day mission, “Reconciliation According to St. Paul.” The mission will be presented here at Christ the King on Wednesday, April 1, at 7:00 PM beginning with Mass and on Thursday, April 2, at 7:00 PM concluding with our annual Communal Lenten Penance Service. Several priests from the deanery will be available for confession. Come and hear the good news of reconciliation according to St. Paul and discover the gift in your life. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to take part in this prayerful preview to Holy Week.

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
Alleluia Burial

The Sunday before Ash Wednesday is the last Sunday that the assembly will sing the Alleluia until the Easter Vigil. Some parishes celebrate “The Burial of the Alleluia” and use the sending song at the end of Mass to “bury” this song of praise that we sing each Sunday. During the season of Lent we “fast” from alleluias, so that we can sing them with greater joy and greater faith on Easter.

RESPECT LIFE - Euthanasia and assisted suicide can appear a reasonable and even compassionate solution to the suffering of individuals and families struggling with illness or the dying process. Yet these are not real solutions – they do not solve human problems, but only take the lives of those most in need of unconditional love.
