SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER
DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY
March 29/30, 2008

Are there locked doors in your life? What happens when Jesus enters?

Gospel Reflection (John 20:19-31): What a surprise for the disciples! The risen Christ comes to them through locked doors, breathes on them, and says, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” By the power of the Spirit, the disciples will forgive sins and communicate the peace of Jesus himself. However, there is another part to this gospel story. The story revolves around Thomas but it is also about us. Sometimes we are like Thomas and miss the most important part of our faith, belief in Jesus! But “blest” are we who are guided in faith by the Holy Spirit.

Discussion Points for Gospel:
There are times when a person needs to be alone to think about something, or to deal with a pain or hurt that others might not understand or share. At those times, we might be tempted to “lock the doors” of our hearts to those who may be able to help. Remember that the risen Jesus can come through locked doors! Ask him to send help, perhaps through a parent, teacher, or friend.
Thomas is known as “the Doubter.” However sometimes doubt can be a good thing. Why? What did Thomas’ doubt lead to? Thomas doubted and we still call him a saint. Doubt was only one part of his path in following Jesus. What is a good way to handle our doubts?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Second Sunday of Easter
Divine Mercy Sunday

Today’s Gospel is for all of us who have not seen but still believe. In moments of great suffering or weakness, we struggle with doubt. But day after day we can pray the words, “I believe; help my unbelief!” (Mark 9:24)

Adults: When I experience doubts, what helps me strengthen my faith?

Children: How can my faith in Jesus be of help to others?

VESPERS
“The Evening Prayer of the Church”
Sundays, 5:00 PM, St. Paul’s Church
everyone is welcome

PRAYER/MEDITATION BOOKLETS
The Living Faith booklets are available at the bulletin boards in church. The months of April, May and June are included in this issue.
We also have available the April issue of Living with Christ. These particular booklets are very well done. Each issue is $2.00, or you can purchase a yearly subscription for $15.00; contact the office for more information.
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY CHURCH BUILD DONATION
During Lent our parish almsgiving project was to use the coinholders to save money for Christ the King’s support of Habitat for Humanity. Once again our goal is $3,000.00. This is a reasonable amount from a parish our size. (Only 150 contributions of $20.) We will continue this project through Pentecost Sunday as part of our Easter season celebration.
We ask for a donation of $20.00 or more from each household. Please use the Habitat Envelopes that are found in the Gathering Space for your contribution. May you experience the joy of the Resurrected Christ in your life.
BABY BOTTLE CAMPAIGN
The Pregnancy Resource Center in Athens, a Christian, pro-life support center, will hold its annual Baby Bottle Campaign next weekend, Saturday/Sunday, April 5th/6th. This year the Center is encouraging gifts in honor of the mother of your choice. They will then send her a beautiful Mother’s Day card telling her of the gift of life you have made in her honor.
BUS TRIP TO BRIDGEPORT & WHEELING
The St. Francis Society of Athens is sponsoring a bus trip to the Wheeling Island Casino on Friday, April 4. We will stop at St. Joseph Church in Bridgeport to have Mass and lunch with Fr. Mucha. We will then travel to the Casino for those who wish to spend a few hours there or you may continue on to Oglebay Park for the tulip festival. Cost for the bus is $30 per person. There will be additional charge for lunch. The bus leaves Christ The King Church at 8:30 AM and will return to Athens at approximately 6:00 PM. Please place your name on the sign-up sheet located on the bulletin board in the Parish Center.
The ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY will meet on Monday, April 7, 7:00 pm in the Parish Center at CTK.
The CATHOLIC LADIES OF COLUMBIA April meeting is Monday, the 14th at 6:30 pm in the CTK Parish Center. Regrets only may be phoned to Candy Goodwin at 594-3090.
LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
   Intercessions within the Eucharistic Prayer
Following the offering, we make intercession. We pray for ourselves, that “we may be filled with his Holy Spirit, and become one body, one spirit in Christ.” We pray for the world, for the Pope, bishops and clergy, and for those who have died. Having offered the one, holy, and effective sacrifice, we pray in Christ’s name for our needs and those of the world.

VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR NEEDED
The Parish Community Service Committee has helped with the community dinner at the UCM house on College Street in Athens. A new leader is to coordinate these efforts.
The PCSC is starting a new schedule for these dinners, concentrating on the summer months when there is greater need due to fewer student volunteers: June 26, July 10 and 24, and August 14 and 28. The event usually takes about 3 hours (arrive at 4:00 PM at the UCM house to begin food preparation; dinner served at 5:30; cleanup finished by about 7:00PM).
Please call the parish at 592-2711 if interested.
