EASTER SUNDAY: THE
RESURRECTION OF THE LORD
April 7/8, 2007

What in our faith do you find hard to understand? How do you help others to understand the Catholic faith?
Gospel Reflection (John 20: 1-9) Alleluia! Imagine how you would have felt if you had been Mary Magdalene or Peter or John on that first Easter morning. What thoughts and emotions would the sight of that empty tomb have aroused in you? At first, Mary Magdalene thought that Jesus’ enemies had stolen his body. Heartbroken, she ran to tell Peter and John. They raced to the tomb and found that the burial wrappings, which had encased Jesus’ body, were cast aside. Seeing this, they believed.

   Discussion Points for Gospel:
We have heard many times about Jesus’ Resurrection. But do we truly and deeply believe it? Do our lives give evidence of the joy and peace and hope of Easter? Spend a little time today in the company of the risen Lord. Ask him to help you to truly believe in his rising, and your own. Sing him an “Alleluia!”
Does your belief in the resurrection affect your everyday life? How you treat others? An early father of the Church wrote, “A Christian should be an alleluia from head to toe!” How can you live a life of praise?
(from Sadlier “We Believe”)

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
EASTER SUNDAY: THE RESURRECTION OF THE LORD

Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb.

Adults: When have I been overcome by fear or a sense of hoplessness? How did my faith in the Risen Lord strengthen me to deal with the situation?

Children: What is the one thing that makes me the happiest? How can I share my happiness with my family?

CONGRATULATIONS!!
Since last September 14 members of our community have been preparing for the reception of sacraments this Easter. They have gathered together faithfully nearly every Thursday evening to study and pray. We congratulate them and are very grateful for the model of faith they have given to us!

EASTER TIME

The fifty days from Easter Sunday to Pentecost are celebrated in joyful exultation as one feast day, or better, as one “great Sunday.” (Athanasius) These, above all others, are the days for the singing of the Alleluia. The Sundays of this season rank as the paschal Sundays, and after Easter Sunday itself, are called the Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Sundays of Easter. The period of fifty sacred days ends on Pentecost Sunday. The first eight days of the Easter season make up the octave of Easter and are celebrated as solemnities of the Lord. On the fortieth day after Easter, the Ascension is celebrated. The weekdays after Ascension until the Saturday before Pentecost inclusive are a preparation for the coming of the Holy Spirit. (General Norms for the Liturgical Year and Calendar, #22-26)

RESPECT LIFE
The new life given us by Christ’s death and resurrection is a gift beyond our comprehension. So also the tiny new life in a woman’s womb is an incomparable gift from God which we are asked to welcome rather than rejecting the gift, saying in effect, “return to sender.”
