FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
April 12/13, 2008

How does Jesus shepherd you?

Gospel Reflection (John 10:1-10): We are all familiar with the image of Jesus as the Good Shepherd. But in this reading from John’s Gospel, Jesus first refers to himself as “the gate” through which the sheep come to safety. The thieves are those people who try to enter God’s kingdom by some other gate. The sheep are those who recognize Jesus as the only door to the green pasture of eternal and abundant life.

Discussion Points for Gospel:
Think about what an ordinary gate does. It keeps safe whatever is in the yard (like small children, animals, a garden) and keeps out what might be harmful. How is Jesus a gate for your life? How does he keep you safe? What does he keep in your life? How can you help others to recognize Jesus as the gate for their lives? One of God’s gifts to us is our free will. We can run out of the yard and leave the gate behind if we like. How can you say yes to Jesus, the gate? How can you show him that you appreciate him and love him?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Fourth Sunday of Easter

Today’s Gospel uses the image of the shepherd and his sheep to describe God’s closeness to us. The shepherd knows his sheep: “He calls his own sheep by name” (John 10:3). And the sheep know the shepherd: “The sheep follow him because they know his voice” (John 10:4).

Adults: In what circumstances am I most likely to forget my value in God’s eyes? What can I do to remember God’s love?

Children: Do I realize that I am the fortunate sheep who is loved and guided by Jesus, my shepherd?

EASTER LILIES - The flowers we’ve had decorating our church for Easter are now ready to be “adopted.” Please take a pot home; they can be planted and will flower again next year.
“Whatever your work is, put your heart into it. . . . It is Christ the Lord you are serving.”
Please return your DPSC pledges soon. Pray that you will be able to appreciate how important it is for each of us to be together in faith in the work of the diocese and in the ministry of our parish faith community.

UPDATE ON THE HABITAT PROJECT -- To date, we have raised $1,368 towards our goal of $3,000 for the Faith Build Coalition -- check out our “Habitat House” in the Gathering Space for a visual display of our progress!
This project will continue through Pentecost Sunday as part of our Easter season celebration. May you experience the joy of the Resurrected Christ in your life.

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
Communion Rite
With the conclusion of the Eucharistic Prayer, we begin another part of the “Liturgy of the Eucharist” and that is the Communion Rite. So far we have experienced the taking of the bread (the Presentation of the Gifts) and the blessing of it (the Eucharistic Prayer). Now we prepare to break and share. But first we join together in the words that Jesus himself gave us. In many parishes people hold hands during the Lord’s Prayer. This is not a gesture dictated by the liturgy, but one which has arisen from the people themselves and their feeling that this expresses the unity indicated by the words “Our Father.” Many parishes invite the people to use the same gesture as the presider, with hands upraised and open, about shoulder height. This is called the “orans” or “prayer” position.

PEACE & JUSTICE MINISTRY - “In simple terms we are saying that good ends (defending one’s country, protecting freedom, etc.) cannot justify immoral means ... We fear that our world and nation are headed in the wrong direction. ... More and more nations are seeking to become nuclear powers. In our quest for more and more security we fear we are actually becoming less and less secure.”
- USCCB Pastoral Letter, The Challenge of Peace, May 3, 1983
