"Mission to Serve": New Orleans Diary

THE SECOND SUNDAY
OF EASTER/DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY
April 7/8, 2007

How do you experience being sent by Jesus?
Gospel Reflection (John 20:19-31) John’s account of that first Easter night is filled with drama. Jesus appears through locked doors and gives his disciples his peace. He gives them the gift of the Holy Spirit and communicates God’s power of forgiveness. Thomas, who misses out on this experience of Jesus, refuses to believe unless he can touch Jesus’ wounds. A week later he has a chance to do just that! Thomas exclaims, “My Lord and my God!” And Jesus tells us how “blest” are we who have believed in his resurrection without having seen his risen body.

   Discussion Points for Gospel:
Thomas is remembered in the Church as “doubting Thomas.” Yet, Jesus respected his doubts, and answered them in a beautiful way. Thomas did not keep his doubts to himself. He shared them with the community and with Jesus. What can you do when you have a doubt or a question about something?
Thomas’ response to Jesus is a beautiful prayer of faith and praise: “My Lord and my God!” Pray this prayer the next time you receive holy communion. Remember that your Lord and God is with you. What are some other ways you can pray this prayer?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

LITURGICAL BITS AND BYTES
Celebrating together

When we come together to do liturgy, we cease being an “I” and become a “we,” the Body of Christ united through Baptism, and joined together to give thanks and praise to God in Christ’s name. Americans are a particularly individualistic people, but our theology calls us to be counter-cultural, to be responsible to and for one another, to pray and sing together, not as individuals, but as a community.

RESPECT LIFE

Adult stem cells have successfully treated more than 70 diseases and injuries, states Dr. D. Losardo at the Tufts University of Medicine. He believes “that embryonic stem cells are going to fade in the rear view mirror of adult stem cells.” Placental tissue from babies already born and umbilical cord blood are other morally acceptable sources of medically useful stem cells.
