SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER:
DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY
April 18/19, 2009

When have you seen the Lord in your life?

Gospel Reflection (John 20:19-31): Put yourself in Thomas’ place. When the risen Jesus appeared to the other disciples, you were absent. Now they are insisting that not only did they see him, but he breathed the power of the Holy Spirit on them. Poor Thomas! You definitely feel left out. So you insist that you will never believe unless you get to stick your finger into Jesus’ wounded hands and side.
A week later you have an opportunity to be true to your word. Jesus once again appears and invites you to touch and examine his wounds. Your doubts are blown away! You exclaim, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus points out that you believe because you have seen him for yourself. But who do you now hear him praising?

Discussion Points for Gospel: What is the first thing Jesus says to his disciples who are hiding behind locked doors? Why do you think he says this? What does receiving the power of the Holy Spirit enable the disciples to do? What good would you say came out of Thomas’ missing out on Jesus’ first visit?
How do we experience the peace and forgiveness of Jesus in the Church today? Sometimes when we hide behind the locked doors of doubt, fear, or anger, Jesus makes his presence known to us. What are some of the ways he might do that?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Second Sunday of Easter

In the giving of the Holy Spirit, Jesus passes to us a particular grace for reconciliation. In the second appearance with Thomas, Jesus is an example of this power of forgiveness as Thomas’ lack of faith is strengthened and expanded.
Adults: What personal experience of forgiveness strengthened my confidence in the gift of the Holy Spirit?

Children: How can I be a peacemaker among my friends?

CATHOLIC HOME MISSION APPEAL
Collection April 24/25

The Archdiocese of Anchorage has 11,500 registered Catholic families, 140,000 square miles, and only 30 active diocesan priests. Sadly, such shortages occur often in United States mission dioceses. The Catholic Home Missions Appeal supports religious education and seminary training to bring increased pastoral care to our home mission parishes. Please give generous in next week’s Appeal. Use envelopes by the bulletin boards in church or from your church support packet.

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
The word Eucharist

Probably you have heard that the word eucharist means thanksgiving. Gratitude is an attitude which can be learned, a habit which can be practiced and developed. As we grow in developing a grateful heart in our daily lives, gathering as the Body of Christ to worship God, gives natural expression to our being a people of thanksgiving. We come together to “do Eucharist,” to give praise and thanks to God.

News from the Peace and Justice Committee - Composting is now starting here at Christ the King. Did you know a lot of kitchen waste, including napkins, does not need to be put in the trash? Food scraps from greens and fruits, paper products, and even grass clippings will be saved in our new compost bins outside. We will combine these wastes with dirt to create nutritious new soil. Parishioners will be involved in saving waste, turning over the future soil in the bins, and possibly bringing their material here if they are unable to compost where they live. Look for our compost bins outside and consider how you can participate at your living space. For more information, including information on indoor composting, contact Kip Rondy- krondy@verizon.net
