FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
April 19/20, 2008

Pray the Our Father. What did Jesus reveal about the Father that is most important to you?

Gospel Reflection (John 14:1-12): Jesus and his disciples are gathered for the Last Supper. He tells them that he is going to “prepare a place” for them but Thomas points out that they do not know the place or the way to get there. What Thomas and the others have not yet grasped is that Jesus himself is the way. When Philip asks Jesus to “show us the Father,” Jesus makes it clear that he and God the Father are one. The words and works of Jesus are the words and works of the Father.

Discussion Points for Gospel:
This is a very beautiful gospel passage. Read through it again and pick one favorite verse. Keep it to yourself for a moment. When everyone has finished choosing a verse, take turns sharing the verse you chose. Tell why you chose it. What does it mean to you to go the way of Jesus in our world today? The slogan “WWJD” (What would Jesus do?) has become popular among some Christians. Would you ever ask this question of yourself? Would it help you decide the way of Jesus for you? Why or why not?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Fifth Sunday of Easter

The disciples had a difficult time understanding Jesus’ message. Today, we also find it hard to trust the words of Jesus: “Do not let your hearts be troubled” (John 14:1). The promise is unambiguous. God is with us always.

Adults: In what areas of my life do I need a stronger faith?

Children: Am I worried or afraid about something? How can Jesus help me?

FIRST COMMUNION

We welcome to the Table of the Lord these children who received their First Communion today:
      Gabby Carey                Javier Cueto
      Raymond Frost            Gabi Grijalva
     Maddie Kamody           Adam Lee
     Liam McSteen             Connor Miller
    Christopher Smith        Drew Zorn

Please pray for these children and their families.
“Whatever your work is, put your heart into it. . . . It is Christ the Lord you are serving.”
There is still time to turn in DPSC donations or pledges; please plan to do so soon. We’ll have a report in next week’s bulletin to let you know how much has been donated to date. Pray that you will be able to appreciate how important it is for each of us to be together in faith in the work of the diocese and in the ministry of our parish faith community.

UPDATE ON THE HABITAT PROJECT
Check our progress in raising funds for the Faith Build Coalition. There is a “Habitat House” in the Gathering Space with a visual display! To date, we have raised $1,939 towards our goal of $3,000 for the Faith Build Coalition.
This project will continue through Pentecost Sunday, which is three weeks away, as part of our Easter season celebration. May you experience the joy of the Resurrected Christ in your life.
CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS APPEAL
April 26/27

Next weekend, our parish will be taking up a collection for the Catholic Home Missions. This Appeal supports missions here in the United States.
The CHMA offers Catholics across our country a wonderful opportunity to help fellow Catholics practice their faith in such areas as Alaska, Appalachia, the Deep South, the Rocky Mountain states, the Southwest, Puerto Rico and island diocese in the Pacific and Caribbean.
This Appeal is a practical way for our parish to share its faith and resources with the mission Church here at home. Over 95 cents of every dollar donated to the Appeal goes directly to the missions to keep church doors open, to support pastors in their priestly ministry, and to provide basic pastoral services like religious education for children.
Please give generously to assist fellow Catholics here in America. It’s one practical way our parish community can be good stewards of God’s gifts and make a difference. For more information, please visit the web site at

NEWMAN
Last week we spread some faith, hope and love through “random acts of kindness” at our service meeting. Join us Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the parish center as we learn a little more about Catholicism during our education meeting. Everyone is welcome — see you there!
Pancake Breakfast is coming!! Mark your calendars for Sunday, May 11, 9-1. More info next week.

ST. FRANCIS SOCIETY BUS TRIP - The St. Francis Society will travel to the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, on Friday, May 2. The bus will leave Christ the King Church at 9:00 AM. Mass will be held at one of the Seminary Chapels. Lunch will be at the Seminary Refectory for an additional fee. There will be a tour of the facilities following lunch. Cost of the bus is $30.00 per person. Please sign up on the sheets located on the bulletin board in the Parish Center or in the Gathering Space in church.
LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
Our Father
Holding hands during the Our Father is an expression of the unity which we feel and/or desire. The danger is that the unity which we feel at that time may be greater than the unity which we feel with one another when we receive communion. Receiving communion should be the high point of our communion with one another as well as our communion with Jesus Christ. The Our Father and our “grass roots” gesture of holding hands during it should be seen only as a preparation for the greater unity which is a primary effect/goal of our sacramental participation.

RESPECT LIFE
“Scientists have made ordinary human skin cells take on the chameleon-like powers of embryonic stem cells, a startling breakthrough that might someday deliver the medical payoffs of embryo cloning without the controversy.” Associated Press article, 11/20/07
PEACE & JUSTICE MINISTRY
Twenty-five years ago the Bishops of the United States issued a Pastoral Letter entitled, “The Challenge of Peace: God’s Promise and Our Response”. They stated: “Peacemaking is not an optional commitment. We are called to be peacemakers not by some movement of the moment, but by Our Lord Jesus. The content and context of our peacemaking is set not by some political agenda or ideological program but by the teaching of His Church.” On the 25th anniversary we will be signing a letter to our Bishop, R. Daniel Conlon, requesting that, in commemoration of the 1983 pastoral letter and in honor of our Christian commitment to peace, the Church focus attention again on peacemaking, and especially nuclear disarmament.
