"Mission to Serve": New Orleans Diary

THE THIRD SUNDAY
OF EASTER

April 21/22, 2007

At what times in your life do you feel Jesus’ presence most clearly?
Gospel Reflection (John 21:1-19 or 21:1-14) The title of this wonderful story from John’s Gospel might be “Surprise Picnic at the Beach.” In a very human way, it shows the great love Jesus and his friends had for one another. While the disciples are out fishing, the risen Christ appears on the shore at Lake Tiberias. They are anchored at a distance and do not recognize him. But when they follow his advice and wind up with a sagging net full of fish, John figures out that the stranger is Jesus. Coming ashore, they enjoy the picnic breakfast Jesus has prepared for them.
Although our reading stops after the meal itself, we know from the rest of the Gospel that Jesus called Peter aside after they ate. He asked Peter to “feed my lambs. Tend my sheep.”

   Discussion Points for Gospel:
Reread the passages in this gospel passage in which Jesus tells the apostles to lower their net on the other side of the boat. Why do you think the apostles took Jesus’ advice? Suppose they had had the know-it-all attitude, “Well, what does Jesus know about fishing? He was a carpenter, not a fisherman. We’re the professionals here!” Where would this arrogance have gotten them?
We share a special meal as Jesus’ disciples today. It is the Eucharist. We also recognize that Jesus calls us to care for others. How will you show your love to those who join in the celebration of the Eucharist with you?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER

If we are to follow the example of Peter in today's Gospel, we will live the connection between love and sorrow. Sometimes the path of love consists in recognizing the ways in which we have hurt others.

Adults: Is there someone in my family whom I have offended and to whom I should offer an apology?

Children: Do I understand that when I have made a mistake, Jesus asks me to say I'm sorry?
THE LITURGICAL MINISTRY SCHEDULE April through June is available on-line. Please contact the parish office if you are unable to access the schedule.
SPAGHETTI DINNER
The Catholic Ladies of Columbia Annual Spaghetti Dinner will be held today Sunday, April 22, at CTK from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Salad, bread, homemade spaghetti and dessert will be served. LITURGICAL BITS AND BYTES
To whom is the prayer at liturgy directed?

If you listen to the prayers, you will notice that it is God the Father. If we think of ourselves as individuals coming to worship, we lack the focus inherent in the liturgy itself. If we think of ourselves as the gathered assembly, the Body of Christ, come together to worship God in Christ’s name, then it becomes understandable why the prayers are addressed to the Father to whom Jesus also prayed. Listen to the prayers, all addressed to the Father, all first person plural.

RESPECT LIFE

Prenatal testing for some 450 medical conditions is now available. While prenatal screening may seem to give couples more power, it often actually takes choices away. “Society’s demand for physical perfection places enormous pressure on couples to ‘conform to the norm’ by aborting less-than-perfect children.” Rev. Tadeusz Pacholczyk, Ph.D. The Southern Cross, 8/17/06
PEACE & JUSTICE MINISTRY MOMENTS

An invitation from Fr. John Rausch and the Catholic Committee of Appalachia: “Climate Change: Our Faith Response,” a program dealing with the morality of global warming, invites resource people and participants to discuss climate change in light of Catholic teachings. Using teleconferencing, this program will link four sites in four states (Richmond, KY, Institute, WV, Abingdon, VA and Asheville, NC) on Saturday, April 28. A group from CTK will be going to WV – PLEASE JOIN US! For information: 592-0419.
