"Mission to Serve": New Orleans Diary

THE FOURTH SUNDAY
OF EASTER

April 28/29, 2007

What does it mean to you that Jesus is the Good Shepherd?
Gospel Reflection (John 10:27-30) The words Jesus speaks in this reading were directed to some Jewish leaders who wanted to trip him up. They were hoping he would call himself the Messiah. Instead, Jesus refers to himself as “the Good Shepherd.” He describes the secure and lasting relationship he has with his sheep, those who truly hear him and believe. Just as no one can separate Jesus and his Father, no one can take Jesus’ disciples away from him.

   Discussion Points for Gospel:
Did you know that the brain capacity of the average dog is about the same as that of a three-year-old child? This means that dogs can understand quite a lot! It also means that there is still a lot that they cannot understand. They do not understand traffic lights, or what makes chicken bones or rat poison bad to eat.
This is why it is up to us to keep our dogs out of danger. We often use our voices to do this: “Come! Heel! Sit! Down!” This is what a good shepherd does for sheep. Just as a dog recognizes its owner’s voice, sheep recognize the shepherd’s voice. We, as the flock of Jesus, hear and recognize Jesus’ voice. When do we hear his voice? How do we recognize it?
What can you do this week to show that you have truly heard the Good Shepherd’s voice?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

By presenting the personal connection between the shepherd and his sheep, the Gospel calls us to accept our personal relationship with Christ. Our faith cannot function in the way God intends unless it is lived as an intimate relationship with the Risen Christ.

Adults: In what area of my life do I need to see Christ's love for me more clearly?

Children: Do I realize that whenever I ask Jesus to help me, he is ready and happy to do so?
THE LITURGICAL MINISTRY SCHEDULE April through June is available on-line. Please contact the parish office if you are unable to access the schedule.

LITURGICAL BITS AND BYTES
The word Eucharist

Probably you have heard that the word eucharist means thanksgiving. Gratitude is an attitude which can be learned, a habit which can be practiced and developed. As we grow in developing a grateful heart in our daily lives, gathering as the Body of Christ to worship God, gives natural expression to our being a people of thanksgiving. We come together to “do Eucharist,” to give praise and thanks to God.

PROPOSED PASTORAL PLAN FOR NATIVITY DEANERY

Each of the five deaneries in the Diocese of Steubenville has been working for three years on a proposed pastoral plan which involves the reconfiguration of the parishes. The plans are necessary because of changing demographics and a fewer number of priests available for ministry in the diocese. Guidelines and parameters were developed by the diocesan administration.
The Nativity Deanery Pastoral Council, after looking at many possible arrangements, has come up with a proposal for our deanery. It is important to note that this is a PROPOSED plan and has not been finalized. It will have to be considered by Bishop Conlon and his advisory bodies. He may recommend changes or send it back to the deanery to be revised.
The Proposal is available on-line at the deanery website (
http://home.catholicweb.com/NativityMaryDeanery). If you do not have access to the internet, there are also copies available at the bulletin boards in church. In addition to the Proposal, you will also find the Parish Configuration Guidelines published by Bishop Conlon at the above cited Deanery website.
