ASCENSION
OF THE LORD

Who do you see keeping God’s word?

Gospel Reflection (John 17:1-11): Could anyone doubt how much Jesus loved his friends after hearing the prayer that Jesus prayed at the Last Supper? As he speaks to his Father, Jesus constantly identifies himself with his friends. The disciples have been entrusted to Jesus by the Father. And Jesus has shared everything with them.
On this fateful night before his death, Jesus prays not for the world but for those who have returned his love. He prays that they will experience the same unity he has with the Father.

Discussion Points for Gospel:
Jesus’ friends were gifts to him from the Father. They were not perfect, but he loved them anyway. Our friends are gifts from God, too. They are not perfect either, but we are called to love them anyway! Do you pray for your friends? How? When? How do you help your friends? How do your friends help you?
In this prayer, Jesus prayed for you, too. You are not perfect, but he loves you anyway!

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Ascension of the Lord

Through Jesus’ prayerful dialogue with the Father described in today’s Gospel (Seventh Sunday of Easter), we are drawn toward God to receive life and glory. For us, eternity is to know God and the Son who was sent to dwell among us.

Adults: How have I come to know Christ over the course of my faith journey?

Children: What people and things remind me that I am a friend of Jesus?

Next Saturday 39 teens will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation from Bishop Conlon at St. Paul’s Church. Please remember these young people in your prayers.
DPSC PROGRESS REPORT
To date $24,256 has been pledged by our parishioners; 20 have pledges $500 or more.
This has been a wonderful response from the parish. As more pledges are returned to the parish, we will easily meet the diocesan goal of $25,596. But our parish goal remains: that each family, as an expression of solidarity, make an appropriate pledge in faith to the DPSC. Those amounts collected in excess of the goal will be returned to the parish without assessment for our own parish use.
“Whatever your work is, put your heart into it. . . . It is Christ the Lord you are serving.”

UPDATE ON THE HABITAT PROJECT
Check out the “Habitat House” in the Gathering Space for a visual display of our progress towards meeting our $3,000 goal for the Faith Build Coalition. So far, we’ve raised $2,014!
This project continues through Pentecost Sunday as part of our Easter season celebration. May you experience the joy of the Resurrected Christ in your life.
REST IN PEACE -- We offer our sympathy and prayers to Keith, Laura, Julia and Douglas Chapman. Keith’s mom, Vivian Chapman, passed away Thursday. May she and all who have died, rest in the peace of our Lord.
THE ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY will meet Monday, May 5, at 7:00 pm in the CTK Parish Center.
NEWMAN-SPONSORED
PANCAKE BREAKFAST
Moms Weekend, Sunday, May 4
9:00 am to 1 pm

Take your mom to breakfast! Spend some family time together at breakfast! Everyone is welcome!
   $4.00 all-you-can eat pancakes; $4.50 all-you-can-eat pancakes w/sausage; $2.50 for children's breakfast.
ASCENSION is a day that unfolds the promise that Jesus will return. ...[On this day] we do not observe a departure. We celebrate a presence. Thus this day in the 50-day sweep of Easter is a peculiarly opportune time for relishing our hope and our status... We should approach this day with open hearts. We do not gather at the Eucharist to have the Ascension explained or to memorize exegetical points. We come to be inspired, to offer praise, to proclaim the Risen One who never leaves us.
(Saint Andrew Bible Missal, pg. 446) —Sourcebook, 1994
***Celebration of the Feast of the Ascension has been transferred this year to today, Sunday, May 5.
MARY GARDEN -- Parishioners might want to check out the additions to our Mary Garden made by the Sunday 1st grade Religious Ed class and their families. After a year studying the Blessed Virgin, the children decided to plant flowers around her statue in the front of church. Below is a list of the flowers and their meaning or association to Mary:
Coreopsis – Christ’s Eye
Dahlia - Churchyard Flower
Daylily - St. Joseph’s Lily
Dianthus - Mary’s Love of God
Forget-Me-Not - Eyes of Mary
Iris - Mary’s Sword of Sorrow
Lavender - Flight into Egypt, also Our Lady’s Drying Herb
Marigold - Mary’s Gold
LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
As we continue the Our Father, we express our trust and absolute dependence on God as we pray for our “daily bread.” We pray, also, that we may be forgiven just as we are willing to forgive. This is another challenging prayer. If we say this honestly, we need to let go of our grudges, our anger, and our bitterness, and resolve to forgive even those who have in truth injured us. This is part of our preparation for Eucharist. Eucharist is the primary sacrament of reconciliation. There is an inherent contradiction between receiving the Body of Christ in communion with all the others who make up that Body and holding on to negativity towards a member or members of that Body. So with the Our Father we have the opportunity to set our hearts right in a spirit of forgiveness and love.

Parish Vocation Committee
If you would be interested in being part of a parish vocation committee, please contact Fr. Marty at the parish office. The work of the committee would involve promoting awareness of vocation needs, pray for vocations within the parish, and coordination with the diocese and the deanery for vocation promotions.
VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR NEEDED -- The Parish Community Service Committee has helped with the community dinner at the UCM house on College Street in Athens. A new leader is to coordinate these efforts.
The PCSC is starting a new schedule for these dinners, concentrating on the summer months when there is greater need due to fewer student volunteers: June 26, July 10 and 24, and August 14 and 28. The event usually takes about 3 hours (arrive at 4:00 PM at the UCM house to begin food preparation; dinner served at 5:30; cleanup finished by about 7:00PM). Please call the parish at 592-2711 if interested.
