"Mission to Serve": New Orleans Diary

THE FIFTH SUNDAY
OF EASTER

May 5/6, 2007

What qualities do you believe are most important for Jesus’ disciples?
Gospel Reflection (John 13:31-33a, 34-35) Jesus is saying farewell to his friends at the Last Supper. He tells them that he will soon be “glorified.” They still do not really get the message about his death and resurrection. They love him too much to face the reality of his crucifixion. So Jesus gathers them close and says, “My children, I will be with you only a little while longer.” He tells them how they are to keep his presence alive within them after he is physically absent. “Love one another,” he says.

   Discussion Points for Gospel:
The commandment to “love one another” can seem trite. This means that we seem to hear it all the time, so much so that it becomes meaningless. Love, love, love!
However, we can look for other ways to say this. Perhaps then we will understand it better. For example, a TV show popular some years ago had this line: “Take care of each other out there!” Taking care of others is a way of loving. This is part of what Jesus meant.
Can you think of other words that say “love one another” or express what love is? Brainstorm. You may want to put some of them on banners for the parish to see. (from Sadlier “We Believe”)

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Jesus’ command in today’s Gospel is new because our love is to be based upon his example. We are to love as he has loved us. Thus our love must include the willingness to sacrifice our lives for others.

Adults: Where in my life do selfishness and preoccupation with my own needs lessen my ability to love?

Children: What are some of the difficult things I must do because of my love for others?

LITURGICAL BITS AND BYTES
The eucharistic liturgy has four main parts:
* The GATHERING RITE which ritually forms us into a worshipping assembly of believers.
* The LITURGY OF THE WORD, also called the TABLE OF THE WORD to show its relative importance of the liturgy of the Eucharist. We are fed at both, but in different ways.
* The LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST which begins with the preparation of the gifts and continues through the communion rite.
* The DISMISSAL RITE, which sends us forth to bring our experience of Christ to the world.
