SIX SUNDAY OF EASTER
May 8/9, 2010

Who are the people who have helped you believe? Whom do you help?

Gospel Reflection: (John 14:23-29) In the gospel today, Jesus continues to speak about love. Those who live will experience God’s love in their lives and the gift of peace that only Christ can give. Jesus also promises to send the Paraclete, or the Comforter, to his disciples. The Paraclete is the Holy Spirit, who will guide the Church for all time. Jesus’ followers will not be left on their own.
Discussion Points: If Jesus’ gift to us is peace, why do we so often lack peace in our hearts, in our homes, and in our world? What does loving Jesus and being true to his word have to do with the gift of peace that he promises?
We believe that God is Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The sign of the cross that we pray so often affirms our faith. One day this week, be aware of yourself as a child of God the Father. How does this affect you, your attitudes, your prayers? Another day, be aware of the gift of Jesus to us. How does this affect you, your attitudes, your prayers? Another day, be aware of the Comforter, God the Holy Spirit, that Jesus promised. How does this awareness of the Spirit affect you, your attitudes, your prayers?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Sixth Sunday of Easter

In the Gospel, Jesus reveals the Father’s plan to sustain the disciples’ belief when Jesus returns to the Father. This departure should be marked by joy rather than sorrow. The departure of Jesus offers to us the gift of peace and the Holy Spirit for all time.
Adults: How have I observed the action of the Holy Spirit in the Church?

Children: When has the Holy Spirit guided me to follow Jesus’ way of love?

Lent/ Easter Parish Project
Habitat for Humanity
Our totals for Habitat amounts to $1,313.75. We are nearly $1,000.00 behind our efforts at this time last year.
We will be successful as a community, if each person gives something. Please do not overlook this opportunity. Your $20.00 offering will truly be well spent.

There are 4 bottles that haven’t been returned so PLEASE bring your bottle, filled or not, to the office ASAP. The Pregnancy Resource Center reuses these bottles every year.
CATHOLIC COMMUNICATION CAMPAIGN - Help us connect the world with God’s Word! Next weekend you will have the opportunity to participate in the Collection for the Catholic Communication Campaign. Collection proceeds support a wide variety of media projects that spread the gospel message and connect communities and individuals to their faith and to the Church. Please contribute generously in the Collection, and visit www.usccb.org/nationalcollections for more information. Remember, half of the collected funds stay right here to support diocesan media projects. Envelopes are located at both bulletin boards in church.

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
 Mystagogy

Mystagogy is reflecting. It is a time set aside for those who just celebrated the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil to share the meaning of the rites and rituals they just celebrated. Perhaps sharing how our experience affected us is something that we do not do often enough. We need to take some time to reflect, perhaps with others, on the meaning of the Holy Week celebrations. We are so used to looking forward to upcoming events that we forget how important it is to look back and share how and where God touched our hearts. That is the whole meaning of Mystagogy. To ask the question after every Mass, “Where did God touch me during the Liturgy?” would be a wonderful way to make more real the power of God’s presence.

BLESSING PRAYER FOR MOTHER’S DAY
God of Love, listen to this prayer.
God of Holy People, of Sarah, Ruth and Rebekah; God of holy Elizabeth, mother of John, of Holy Mary, Mother of Jesus, bend down Your ear to this request and bless the mother of our family.
Bless her with the strength of Your spirit, she who has taught her child/children how to stand and how to walk.
Bless her today, now, in this lifetime, with good things, with health. Bless her with joy, love, laughter and pride in her child/children and surround her with many good friends.
May she who carried life in her womb be carried on one day to Your divine embrace: there, for all eternity, to rejoice with her family and friends.
This blessing and all graces, we pray, descend upon the mother of our family: in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen+
“The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father wills end in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you.”
