PENTECOST SUNDAY
May 26/27, 2007

When have you experienced the Holy Spirit’s help in keeping Jesus’ word?
Gospel Reflection (John 20:19-23) Once again we are reliving Easter night with Jesus and the disciples. He breathes on them, communicating the gift of the Holy Spirit. They gladly receive Jesus’ Spirit and his ministry of forgiving sins. At Pentecost the Spirit will send them forth as living signs that Jesus has overcome sin and death.

   Discussion Points for Gospel:
Peace and forgiveness are gifts from Jesus in the Holy Spirit. Do you need to be a more peaceful and forgiving person?
Forgiveness is not “forgiving and forgetting.” It does not deny that a wrong or a hurt took place. When we hurt someone, the bridge between us falls down. Our bond with that person is broken. When we forgive someone, or are forgiven, we allow the Holy Spirit to rebuild the bridge between us, even stronger than before. Because we are limited and human, we may not feel this all at once. But forgiveness is part of God’s love. When we forgive, we bring God’s love into our lives and into the lives of those who have hurt us. We can cross the bridge to meet again. We may still remember being hurt, but we can recall it with thanksgiving. We can thank God for the new and stronger bridge. Are there any broken bridges in your life? What might be a first step to the Spirit’s gift of rebuilding and repair? How could you ask the Holy Spirit for help?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
PENTECOST SUNDAY

Jesus promises that the Holy Spirit will teach us how to live the Christian life. This Spirit calls us not only to practice the quiet habits of obedience and acceptance but also the strong virtues of courage and asserting what is right.

Adults: In what ways might I sometimes use Jesus’ teaching of love and peace as a reason to excuse myself from speaking out and opposing what is unjust?

Children: How can I speak up for what is good and right this week?

PENTECOST

A feast of the universal Church which commemorates the Descent of the Holy Ghost upon the Apostles, fifty days after the Resurrection of Christ, on the ancient Jewish festival called the “feast of weeks” or Pentecost (Exodus 34:22; Deuteronomy 16:10). Pentecost is the Greek for “the fiftieth” (day after Easter).
The colour of the vestments is red, symbolic of the love of the Holy Ghost or of the tongues of fire. In Italy it was customary to scatter rose leaves from the ceiling of the churches to recall the miracle of the fiery tongues. In France it was customary to blow trumpets during Divine service, to recall the sound of the mighty wind which accompanied the Descent of the Holy Ghost. In England the gentry amused themselves with horse races. On Pentecost the Russians carry flowers and green branches in their hands.

LITURGY BYTES & BITS
Why is the altar reverenced?

When the ministers have processed to the front of the church, all (except those carrying the cross or the Book of Gospels) bow to the altar. As they go to their places the presider goes behind the altar and bows and kisses it before going to his chair. The altar is a symbol of the Body of Christ. As such we reverence it. We do not treat it like an ordinary table, but place on it only those things needed for the celebration of the eucharistic liturgy: the chalice and purificator, the corporal, the bread and wine, and the Sacramentary from which the presider will lead us in the prayers.
