TRINITY SUNDAY
June 2/3, 2007

Describe the ways you relate to each person of the Blessed Trinity.
Gospel Reflection (John 16:12-15) Today’s gospel continues with Jesus’ advice and instructions to the disciples at the Last Supper. He promises that the Spirit will be there to guide his followers to the truth. The Spirit will speak in Jesus’ name, just as Jesus speaks in the Father’s name. Each of these three Persons in one God belongs to the other. We call this mystery of God’s identity the Blessed Trinity.

   Discussion Points for Gospel:
We often use a triangle as a symbol for the Trinity. Each side is equal, and each of the three sides make one triangle. In the Trinity, all three Persons (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) are equal. Each one is God, yet one is not “more God” than the other. Together, they are one God. Saint Patrick used a shamrock to describe the Trinity. A shamrock is one plant with three leaves. Can you think of or design a symbol or sign that helps you relate to the Trinity? (from Sadlier “We Believe”)

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
TRINITY SUNDAY

Today's Gospel makes it clear that the role of the Spirit is to communicate the truth of the Father and Son to us. Inspired by this truth we are called to extend it in love to others.

Adults: Am I conscious that the Trinity dwells within me? How could this awareness affect the decisions I make and the people I love?

Children: Who could I love better and thus pass on God's love for me?
TRINITY SUNDAY
The first Sunday after Pentecost was instituted to honor the Most Holy Trinity. In the early Church no special Office or day was assigned for the Holy Trinity. In the Sacramentary of St. Gregory the Great there are prayers and the Preface of the Trinity. John XXII ordered the feast for the entire Church on the first Sunday after Pentecost. Since it was after the first great Pentecost that the doctrine of the Trinity was proclaimed to the world, the feast becomingly follows that of Pentecost.

LITURGY BYTES & BITS

The altar belongs to all of us. We show this by keeping the altar accessible from all sides, not barricaded by flowers and other décor. We are all gathered around the altar as Christ gathered the disciples around the table at the last supper. This image is clearer in churches which have moved the altar out to a more central location among those assembled. When the altar’s location is indeed among the people, there is a clearer perception and realization of being gathered around the altar as around a community table. There should be nothing that can be perceived as an impediment to approaching the table by members of the community.
