Feast of Pentecost
  June 3-4, 2006
What gift of the Holy Spirit sustains your faith today?

Gospel Reflection (John 20: 19-23): Some events are so life-changing that we have to keep going back to them in memory to grasp their true meaning. That’s how it was with the gospel writers and the resurrection of Jesus. In this reading, John recalls the evening of the first Easter. Jesus appears in the midst of the disciples and gives them his peace. He breathes on them and gives them the breath of the Holy Spirit so that they have the power to forgive sins.
As we know from the first reading, the Spirit would be experienced again as fire and a mighty wind at Pentecost. But whatever form the Spirit takes, his gifts are intended to bring unity and peace to the Body of Christ.
Discussion Points for Gospel: How would you complete this statement: “To me, peace means....”  Describe times when you have experienced peace. When Jesus says “Peace be with you,” what do you think he has in mind?
Why is the power to forgive sins so important in the Christian community? What examples have you seen in your family or your parish of people sharing the peace of Christ? (from Sadlier "We Believe" web site)

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS FOR THE RIDE HOME
Pentecost

Today's Gospel passage links Jesus' gift of the Holy Spirit with his disciples' ability to forgive sins and work in the world for reconciliation. As you go about your routine this week think about the following questions:

Adults:  How can I translate my experience of being forgiven for my own sins into a greater willingness to forgive those who have sinned against me?

Children: How can I show someone who has hurt me that I truly forgive them and want to be their friend?
**PLEASE NOTE
: "The Needleers" will gather again on Monday, June 5, at 1:00 p.m. in the CTK Parish Center.
RECEPTION TO CELEBRATE FR. MARTY'S 40TH!

On Sunday, June 4, following the 10:30 Mass there will be a reception to celebrate Fr. Marty's 40 years of priesthood. It will take place in the gardens outside the front of church. Come and honor Fr. Marty!! This event will be hosted by the CTK Pastoral Council.
LET US GIVE THANKS AND PRAISE!
On June 9 at 8:00 pm there will be a Mass of thanksgiving offered for graduates and their friends and family members. Afterwards there will be a reception in the Parish Center.
We invite the entire community of CTK to share in this celebration. We especially encourage those parishioners who are part of the university community to come.
Our parish has been blessed in many ways over the past 12 months. This is a wonderful way as a community to praise God from whom all blessings flow.
Please fill out one of the forms to be found in the Gathering Space or call the parish office 592-2711 with the number of people who will be attending with you so that we may better prepare for the reception.
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL - Families get your passports stamped and visas ready for travel! A new VBS adventure called Trading Places is about to begin. Kids are going to discover as they travel that Jesus Makes a World of Difference. This fun-filled Vacation Bible School will take place daily from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM, July 9 - 13, in the spacious Christ The King Parish Center. Through hands-on activities, kids will visit Mexico, Brazil, Poland, China and Kenya to see how kids all over the globe can worship the same God. And along the way, they’ll learn what it would be like to “trade places” with them. Registration begin today. Registration materials can be picked up in the vestibule of the church. Contact Dawn McCarthy (707-1342) or Karen Matteson (594-7479 if you have any questions or if you are interested in volunteering to help with this awesome children’s project.
Jesus breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the holy Spirit."

RESPECT LIFE
Two recently published studies show significant long-term emotional effects in women who have had abortions. A five-year study in Norway comparing women who suffered miscarriages with those who had an abortion found that women who had abortions "suffered significantly greater distress, including anxiety, guilt and disgrace." A New Zealand study found a young woman's risk of depression, anxiety, and drug and alcohol abuse is raised by having an abortion, thus revealing that abortion increases pyschological distress rather than alleviating it.
