"Mission to Serve": New Orleans Diary

THE MOST HOLY BODY & BLOOD
OF CHRIST
June 9/10, 2007

How does the Eucharist nourish you? What “loaves and fishes” do you have that nourish others?
Gospel Reflection (Luke 9:11-17) Have you noticed how all the readings today speak of feeding people? Our gospel story shows us Jesus and the Twelve surrounded by a huge, hungry crowd. When the Twelve protest that they cannot feed everyone, Jesus has them divide the crowd into smaller groups. Then he takes what they have—five loaves, two fishes—gives thanks (blesses the food), breaks it, and invites the disciples to pass it around and share it. There is more than enough for everyone! We can, of course, see this story as a sign of the Eucharist, in which Jesus continues to feed the multitude of his followers. But we can also see it as a challenge to do what we can to feed the millions of hungry people in our world today.

   Discussion Points for Gospel:
What four actions of Jesus make this event similar to the event of the Last Supper? This story shows Jesus taking ordinary food and asking that his disciples share it. How can we share ordinary food with the hungry today? (from Sadlier “We Believe”)

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
BODY & BLOOD OF CHRIST

The action of the Eucharist is mirrored in Jesus' action of blessing, breaking and giving the loaves to the crowd in today's Gospel. The power of the Eucharist is meant to affect not only those in church but people who gather everywhere.

Adults: What can I do to connect my participation in the Eucharist more clearly with service to the world?

Children: What can I do this week at school and at home to help others?

FEAST OF THE BODY & BLOOD OF CHRIST (CORPUS CHRISTI)
This feast is celebrated in the Latin Church on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday to solemnly commemorate the institution of the Holy Eucharist. In the United States and some other countries the solemnity is held on the Sunday after Trinity.
St. Juliana of Mont Cornillon, from her early youth, had a great veneration for the Blessed Sacrament, and always longed for a special feast in its honor. She made known her ideas to several bishops and Pope Urban IV. Urban IV, always an admirer of the feast, ordered the annual celebration of Corpus Christi in the Thursday next after Trinity Sunday, at the same time granting many indulgences to the faithful for the attendance at Mass and at the Office.
CONGRATULATIONS GRADUATES!

LITURGY BYTES & BITS
   The Gloria
is used on all Sundays and major feasts throughout the year except during Lent and Advent; is a hymn and should be sung rather than recited; is a hymn to praise God for God’s mercy and to acclaim the presence of the risen Lord in our midst; is omitted during Lent because of the Church’s desire to focus on the penitential aspect of that season, and during Advent, because for a time the Church also viewed that season as penitential. That Advent has never been considered as having the same penitential cast as Lent is shown by the fact that the Alleluia continues to be sung during Advent. The Gloria is omitted and in contrast comes back joyfully in the angels’ song at Christmas.

Then taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing over them, broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd.
