"Mission to Serve": New Orleans Diary

THE 11TH SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
June 16/17, 2007

Give thanks for God’s forgiveness. Whom do you need to forgive?
Gospel Reflection (Luke 9:7-36—8:3 OR 7:36-50) The gospel reading tells the beautiful story of Jesus’ response to the sinful woman. In her love for Jesus, she disregards the usual way guests are treated at a banquet. She bathes Jesus’ feet first with her tears, then with precious ointment, and wipes them with her hair. Simon, the host of the banquet, shows Jesus none of the usual courtesies when he arrives. Moreover he condemns Jesus for associating with the woman who was a known sinner. In telling Simon a story about forgiving debts, Jesus praises the woman. She is forgiven much because of her great love. Jesus points out Simon’s need for forgiveness—because of his lack of hospitality, his lack of respect for each of them, and his self-righteousness. The story is a powerful example of the relationship between forgiveness and love.

   Discussion Points for Gospel:
How do we treat one another? Do we treat friends—and strangers—as if we are all equal? Or do we allow skin color, gender, cultural, economic, or even petty differences stand in the way. Do we sometimes discriminate because someone is different? What if God acted that way toward us? (from Sadlier “We Believe”)

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
11th Sunday in Ordinary Time

In today’s Gospel Jesus reminds the Pharisees that one who has been forgiven much ha all the more reason to love the person who has offered that forgiveness. As you go about your routine this week, consider the following:

Adults: How will I express my love for god this week, knowing that I have been forgiven many times?

Children: How can I show my love for God this week through my words and actions?
Dear God, thank You for the gift of our Fathers!
Thank You for their encouragement, their guidance, and their provision for us. Thank You for their patience, understanding, and sense of humor—in short, for their unfailing love!

Please bless our Fathers with Your Spirit of wisdom, counsel, and fortitude. May they feel Your love in their hearts, Your peace in their minds, and Your joy in their spirits this special day.

We ask all this in the name of Your Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, through the intercession of good Saint Joseph, whom You chose to be His father on earth. Amen.

A father’s blessing gives a family firm roots.
—Sirach 3:9

LITURGY BYTES & BITS
The Opening Prayer concludes the Gathering Rite or Introductory Rites of the mass.

It is the prayer of the people. The presider says, “Let us pray.” The pause which follows is not to give the altar server time to bring the book to the presider. It is a time which the members of the assembly are given for their own prayer.
In the early Church, the members of the assembly voiced their prayers out loud. When this had gone on for a time, the presider said a CONCLUDING prayer which collected all the prayers voiced by the people and summed them up, bringing the communal prayer to an end. Before Vatican II that prayer was known as the COLLECT. Now it is called the Opening Prayer.
The Opening Prayer is called that because it is the first “presidential” prayer of the liturgy, that is, the first prayer which the presider voices in the name of the people. However, his part of the prayer is the CONCLUSION to the prayer which we are all to have said in response to the invitation, “Let us pray.”
