Nativity of John the Baptist
June 23/24, 2007

What does it mean for Catholics today to be “strong in spirit?”

Gospel Reflection (Luke 1:57-66, 80) This account of the birth of John the Baptist is one special message from God after another. First of all, John’s mother was past the usual age of child-bearing. John was an unexpected gift from God. (Remember, the name John means “gift of God”.) When Zechariah agreed that, indeed, this child?s name was “gift,” he could once again speak and bless God. The neighbors certainly got the message?and wondered in awe, “What will this child be?”
Discussion Points for Gospel: When God sends us to do his work, he first prepares us. He gives us people who care. Whatever name we are called, we too are “gifts of God.” When we use our gifts for good today, everyone says, “You are going to do great things in the future.” Who are the people who care about you? Do you see yourself as a gift of God? How can you remind yourself that you are? How are you using your gifts? What do you hope to become in the future? How could you be like John and work for God in this world? How could you work for God today? (from Sadlier “We Believe”)

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Nativity of John the Baptist

Today’s Gospel says that John “grew and became strong in spirit” (Luke 1:80). Think about some of the ways that God is asking you to fulfill your destiny as a servant of the Lord.
Adults: What is one, specific action I can build into my daily routine that will help me better achieve my full potential as a human being and servant of the Lord?
Children: How can I be a “light to the nations” this week by doing some special act of goodness or kindness for someone?

LITURGY BYTES & BITS
Liturgy of the Word
If the Gathering Rite has done its job, it has helped us become a unified worshiping community and disposed us to listen to God’s Word in Scripture. God’s Word is living, and it is proclaimed by a living person. An important part of the dynamic of HEARING God’s Word is seeing the person proclaiming, and especially, LISTENING. This living Word is proclaimed to us as individuals and to us as a Church community. It is the story of our salvation, the story of God working our lives. It is a story of past history, of God’s activity in our lives today, and of the future that is to come. from Ministry Resource Update, Resource Publications, San Jose, California
PETER’S PENCE COLLECTION
This collection will take place next weekend, June 30/July 1. The theme for this year’s collection is Let us make sure that none of God’s children ever feels alone and is based on a September, 2006 homily given by Pope Benedict XVI in which he explained how those who are baptized create one family of believers who are never alone.
The Peter’s Pence Collection enables the Holy Father to respond with emergency financial assistance to our brothers and sisters in need throughout the world -- those who suffer as a result of war, oppression, disease and natural diseasters.
Please use the envelopes in your collection box or the ones placed at the bulletin boards in church.
