"Mission to Serve": New Orleans Diary

13TH SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
June 30/July 1, 2007

When did you first decide to follow Jesus?

Gospel Reflection (Luke 9:51-62) Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem. He is preparing himself to face suffering and death. He forgives the Samaritans who refuse to welcome him, showing his disciples how to behave toward their enemies. He then responds to three different people who want to follow him. Does he say, “Come with me and all will be well?” Not at all. Jesus tells them right up front that the cost of becoming his disciple is high. That cost may include giving up home, family, and means of income.

Discussion Points for Gospel:
Plowing gets a field ready for planting. In Jesus’ time, a farmer plowed a field by following an ox on foot. The farmer used the reins in his hands to give signals to the ox. If the farmer looked back, he would of course move his body around. Then the reins would jiggle. The ox would think it was a “turn signal” from the reins. The ox would veer from the straight path and the farmer’s smooth straight row would be ruined. Jesus asks us to keep looking straight ahead as we follow him. No looking back to check on how we’re doing! This takes trust. How do you show you trust Jesus to lead you “straight ahead?” When are you tempted to “look back” (perhaps at your sins and failings) or to look around in a different direction? Who or what helps you to keep trusting Jesus? How can you show that you are “fit” for the reign of God? (from Sadlier “We Believe”)

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The call to discipleship that we receive in baptism is ultimately a call to share in Christ’s mission of proclaiming the Gospel to all people. As you go about your routine this week, consider the following:

Adults: What priorities on my “to do” list can I rearrange this week to be a better disciple?

Children: How can I be a follower of Jesus this week by showing someone love?
PETER’S PENCE COLLECTION -- this weekend!
The collection enables the Holy Father to respond with emergency financial assistance to our brothers and sisters in need throughout the world -- those who suffer as a result of war, oppression, disease and natural disasters.
Please use the envelopes in your collection box or the ones placed at the bulletin boards in church.

FOURTH OF JULY

Celebrate our country’s Independence Day this Wednesday with the Eucharist -- in thanksgiving for the blessings of our country; in petition that we might live up to our responsibilities as citizens -- 9:00 a.m. in the church. Have a safe and happy 4th!
The July issue of Living with Christ is now available at the bulletin board in the Gathering space. These booklets are very well done. Each issue is $2.00, or you can purchase a yearly subscription for $15.00. Contact the office for more information.
LIVING FAITH
These FREE prayer and reflections booklets are available in the Gathering Space. The months of July, August and September are included in this issue.
NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING
God, the author of love, calls us to love one another with wholeness, respect, and dignity. Come see how you can honor your beloved through NFP. The next Natural Family Planning series begins July 2 at 7:00pm CTK Parish Center. For information about the class series contact Bob and Sharon Colvin 593-5713 or colvin.sl@gmail.com
ST. FRANCIS SOCIETY
We’ll travel to St. Mary of the Hills in Buchtel for 11:00 AM Mass on Friday, July 6. Lunch will be at the Inn at Hocking College in the Star Brick Restaurant (buffet is $7.95). We will then tour the Military Museum in Nelsonville and end the day with a stop at the Ice Cream Shop on the square. Car pool will leave from Christ The King at 10:30 AM. Sign-up on the sheet posted on the bulletin board in the Parish Center.
CATHOLIC LADIES OF COLUMBIA
The CLC is having dinner and an evening retreat at the Sacred Heart Retreat House in Coolville on July 9. Sister Mariel will lead the retreat. A carpool will leave Christ the King at 4:30 PM, and we should be arriving back at CTK around 8:30 PM. Please RSVP to Barb Ley at (740) 797-4316, as an accurate number of attendees is needed for the dinner preparations.
MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER WEEKEND
Celebrate the “fullness of joy” in your marriage that God promises to all of his “beloved couples.” Attend a World Wide Marriage Encounter weekend July 27-29 in Akron. Contact Tim & Lori at 330-305-9962 or email them at WorldwideME@aol.com.
HOW ARE YOUR GARDENS GROWING?
With the much-needed rain we’ve received lately, vegetable gardens should start producing bumper crops! If you’d like to donate your extra veggies, please bring them to the Parish Center. We’ll give them to the Vincent de Paul Society to deliver to the needy. Or fresh veggies would be appreciated as part of the UCM dinners! Give us a call.

Liturgy of the Word

Christ IS the Word
. Christ is present in the Word proclaimed at liturgy. When Catholics used to speak of the “real presence” what we meant was Christ present in the Eucharist. Vatican II declared an expanded meaning to “real presence”. For example, the “General Instruction of the Roman Missal” states that “When the Scriptures are read in the Church, God himself is speaking to his people, and Christ, present in his own word, is proclaiming the Gospel.” (GIRM 9) The “Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy” says, “He (Christ) is present in his word, since it is he himself who speaks when the holy Scriptures are read in the Church.” (CSL 7) --Ministry Resource Update, Resource Publications, San Jose, California
“But you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL NEWS
The truth is . . . Jesus is the way to heaven! At Quest for Truth Catholic VBS kids discover the truth about Jesus. Also, kids will go over the Sacraments, learn about a new Saint each day, and be given prayer cards to help them enrich their Catholic faith. Do you know children who would benefit? Grab the form in the vestibule and enroll them today for the program on July 15-19 at Christ the King Parish Center!

VBS CHILDREN’S BOOK COLLECTION - Do you have unused children’s books laying around? Would you like to help a worthy cause? In conjunction with St. Paul’s CCW, the VBS program will be collecting books to be distributed to local organizations. If you would like to donate books, please drop them off in the box in the Gathering Space, or send them in during July 15-19.
HELP NEEDED! Christ the King has been providing the free community supper on the 2nd Thursday of each month at the UCM house on College Street, across from the city parking lot (not the garage!). For the summer months (July 12 and August 9), the college students aren’t available to help out, so we’re asking for volunteers from our church to come and help. We usually start preparing food at about 4:00 PM in the basement of the UCM house, and we serve dinner at about 5:30. We are usually finished cleaning up by 7:00. We can use help for any portion of that time - the food is already provided, and we just need to cook it, serve it, and then clean up. If you can come and help, please call Mary or Pat Reddan at 740 594 8591.
