"Mission to Serve": New Orleans Diary

Vacation Bible School

13TH SUNDAY OF
ORDINARY TIME
July 1/2, 2006
What fears in today’s world can faith address?
Gospel Reflection (Mark 5:21-24, 35-43): Imagine the grief of the father of the little girl who is dying. The story is told almost like a play. First, Jairus, the girl’s father, comes to Jesus for help; but before he can reach her, people come to say that she has died. Then Jesus goes to the house of Jairus. Jesus takes the girl’s hand and says, “Little girl, I say to you, arise!” Immediately she stands up and begins to walk around. Imagine the party in Jairus’ home that night! Like the crowd in this scene, we may be inclined not to accept the word of Jesus at times. We may think we know better. But Jesus will still remind us of the need to trust him and to have no fear.

Discussion Points for Gospel:
Share the imagined feelings of the father, the girl, and the crowd. You may want to volunteer to read aloud and enact the story of Jairus and his daughter.
Have you ever felt “stuck”? Have you ever felt, “I don’t know how I’m going to do this, or get through this”? Think of a situation like that in your life or in the life of someone you know. Pray quietly for a moment. Like Jairus, you might like to pray, “Jesus, please come.” You might like to say this several times. Then imagine Jesus saying your name or the name of the person you are praying for. He says, “______, I say to you, arise!” Jesus is with you and those you love in every situation. He will give you what you need, whether that is more patience, or kindness, or truth, or even a new way to go about things. When you ask Jesus to come, he comes! And when he comes, he brings new life.

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS FOR THE RIDE HOME
13th Sunday in Ordinary Time

We can miss the power of Christ's presence if we never stop to reflect upon it. It is a helpful practice to begin each day with a reminder that we do not face that day alone. Christ goes with us as a companion and guide.

Adults: How can I make the reality of the intimate presence of Christ with me a daily awareness?

Children: Since Jesus is with me in a special way in the Eucharist, how should I ask him to help me when I receive Holy Communion?
THERE IS NO CHILD CARE AT 10:30 MASS.

SAINTS OF JULY
Blessed Junipero Serra

Miguel Jose Serra was born on Majorca November 24, 1713, and took the name of Junipero in 1730 when he entered the Franciscan Order. Ordained in 1737, he taught philosophy and theology at the University of Padua. At the age of thirty-seven, he landed in Mexico City and spent the rest of his life working for the conversion of the peoples of the New World. On August 28, 1784, worn out by his apostolic labors, Father Serra was called to his eternal rest. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on September 25, 1988. His feast day is July 1.

St. Thomas
St. Thomas was a Jew, called to be one of the twelve Apostles. He is best known for his role in verifying the Resurrection of his Master. Thomas’ unwillingness to believe that the other Apostles had seen their risen Lord on the first Easter Sunday merited for him the title of “doubting Thomas.” His feast day is July 3rd and he is the patron of architects.
