"Mission to Serve": New Orleans Diary

14TH SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
July 7/8, 2007

What “harvests” is your parish being called to reap?

Gospel Reflection (Luke 10:1-12, 17-20) If Jesus sounds like he means business in this reading, he does! What matters most to him in the whole world is to make people understand that the reign of God is at hand. This is why he sends his disciples out in every direction.
The harvest (people who have not heard the good news of the gospel) is ready right now. Jesus instructs the disciples to go quickly and travel light. They are to spread his peace, cure the sick, and proclaim the reign of God.

Discussion Points for Gospel:
At this time, Jesus had seventy-two disciples. How many disciples does he have today? The number is probably in the millions. What are we, the disciples of Jesus, doing today to announce the kingdom of God? How are we carrying out Jesus’ message of love and peace and justice and hope in our world today?
Imagine for a moment that Jesus sent you and a partner into your town or city to proclaim God’s kingdom. How would you do it? What would you do first?
Is there a way you could do this very thing in reality? Why or why not?
(from Sadlier “We Believe”)

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Whenever we do the works of charity and justice, we are part of the unfolding of God's plan. Our love for the poor, the lowly and for sinners is part of Christ's continuing ministry of proclaiming that God's kingdom is at hand.

Adults: What is one specific way that I can touch the life of one of God's "infants" this week with an act of love that says to that person "the kingdom is at hand"?

Children: How might I bring peace to others this week?

CHURCH PICNIC COMING!

St. John’s Catholic Church Annual Homecoming is Sunday, July 29, at the church on Dutch Ridge Road in Guysville. Mark your calendars NOW and plan to attend this event that includes family activities, fun and FOOD. Beginning at noon a chicken OR ham dinner will be served. The cost of the meal is $5 per adult and $3 per child. There will be BINGO, raffles and other games. Everyone is invited to attend.
LITURGY BYTES & BITS
The Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist together make up one celebration. The Liturgy of the Word is the foundation on which the Liturgy of the Eucharist is based. In the Liturgy of the Word we hear God’s call to be the people of God and we hear how much God has done for us and continues to do for us. The Liturgy of the Eucharist is a response to that call and to the love which has been shown to us. Our response can only be to “do Eucharist,” that is, to give thanks and praise to the One who has given us everything. The “General Instruction to the Roman Missal” describes the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist as “two parts so closely connected that they form but one single act of worship.” --

COUNSELING ASSISTANCE FUND
The holidays can be a stressful time for those who have been harmed by sexual abuse, especially by representatives of the Church. Counseling is a vital part of the healing process for these survivors. The Counseling Assistance Fund, created by the Catholic Conference of Ohio, can help individuals who are reluctant to contact the Church for help. For more information on this program or to submit a claim, you may go to the website at www.counselingassistancefund.org
HELP NEEDED! CTK has provided the free community supper on the 2nd Thursday of the month at the UCM house on College Street. The college students aren’t here during summer months to help out, so we’re asking for volunteers from CTK to help on July 12 and/or August 9. We start food prep around 4:00 PM in the basement of UCM, and we serve dinner at 5:30. Clean up is finished by 7:00. We can use help for any part of the evening -- the food is already provided; we just need to cook it, serve it, and then clean up. If you can come and help, please call Mary or Pat Reddan at 740 594 8591.
