14TH SUNDAY OF
ORDINARY TIME

July 8/9, 2006
What prophetic voices do you hear in your parish? In the Church? In the world?
Gospel Reflection (Mark 6:1-6): “Who does he think he is?” and “She’s just too much!” are common complaints used to belittle others. When Jesus first returned to Nazareth and preached in the local synagogue, his audience was amazed. They could not believe that one who had grown up in their midst could be such an outstanding teacher and healer. Perhaps they envied and feared the power they sensed in him.
Because of their refusal to believe, Jesus could work few miracles among them. He understood that a prophet is not honored in his own hometown. So he moved on to other villages where the people welcomed him.

Discussion Points for Gospel:
When and why have others ever said to you “You’re just too much” or “Who do you think you are?” when they disapproved of you? What might these complaints reveal about the ones who make them? What questions did the people of Nazareth have about Jesus? Why do you think they were so determined to reject him?
Find and quote Jesus’ response to the way he has been treated. How does his experience help you to act when you are misunderstood or criticized for doing the right thing?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS FOR THE RIDE HOME
14th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today's readings remind us how Jesus, as Ezekiel the prophet before him, encountered resistance when he tried to bring God's word to his friends and neighbors. As you go about your routine this week, think about the following question:

Adults: When my good intentions are misunderstood by those closest to me, how should I respond?

Children: How can I share God's love this week with my friends and neighbors?

MISSION TO SERVE

Our group of 17 "missionaries" returned to Athens last Sunday very tired but also with a sense of fulfillment because they were able to help several people in the process of returning to their homes.
"I just feel so blessed and humbled to have had the chance to do God’s work with such a special group of people. And that’s really what being Catholic is all about -- it’s that communal aspect, like the disciples. We are all sinners, susceptible to the trappings of human nature and we can’t go it alone. We need each other, like crops need sunlight and water, to replenish and enrich the spiritual life of the soul. And after going on the trip, I really feel renewed in the Holy Spirit." (posted by Kevin)
Please check out pictures and more impressions of the trip by linking into their web page from the CTK website.

SAINTS OF JULY
St. Veronica Giuliani
A native of Binasco, Italy, born in 1660, she entered the Capuchins in 1677. A mystic, she was the recipient of a stigmata in 1697 and visions, the accounts of which are quite detailed. Her feast day is July 9.

St. Benedict
Benedict founded the monastery that became the roots of the Church’s monastic system. Instead of founding small separate communities he gathered his disciples into one whole community. His own sister, Saint Scholastica, settled nearby to live a religious life.
Benedict died in 547 while standing in prayer before God. His feast day is July 11.

St. Bonaventure
Bishop and Doctor of the Church, Bonaventure was born in Tuscany, in 1221. At the age of twenty-two he entered the Franciscan Order and was sent to Paris to complete his studies. In Paris he became the intimate friend of the great St. Thomas Aquinas. He received the degree of Doctor, together with St. Thomas Aquinas. He died while he was assisting at the Second Council of Lyons, on July 15, 1274. His feast day is July 15.

RESPECT LIFE
We live in a society that wants to wipe out human imperfection. We attempt to control every aspect of our lives. This attitude has led to increased pressure on parents to abort "imperfect" children, with doctors suggesting to parents that it would be selfish to give birth to such children. Theresa Bonoparis, Partners for Life newsletter (Good Counsel publication), 11/05.

“Since peace is based upon good order, it follows that, for empires as well as individuals, concord should have her principal foundation in justice and charity.” - Pope Leo XIII
