"Mission to Serve": New Orleans Diary

15TH SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
July 14/15, 2007

What person or people do you find most difficult to recognize as your neighbor?

Gospel Reflection (Luke 10:25-37) Jesus was a great storyteller. We can imagine how fascinating his voice and manner must have been when he told the parable of the Good Samaritan to the lawyer who wanted to be saved. And how surprised the lawyer must have been when he heard the answer to the question “Who is my neighbor?” My neighbor is not just the person next door or a member of my parish or my racial group. My neighbor is anyone in need? Even if he or she seems to be an enemy. Jesus’ parable reveals the true meaning of love of neighbor. It is going out of our way to do everything for someone that we would want done for us.
Discussion Points for Gospel:
What is Jesus’ message in this parable? If you truly understand Jesus’ message, how could you carry it out in your own school, neighborhood, or parish?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

LITURGY BYTES & BITS
The word of God is meant for the community. In the United States, we have an individualistic notion of religion. We tend to relate to God as individuals. This is very different from the Jewish concept of the religious community. God took the people of Israel as the chosen people, not as individuals, but as a whole people. As the people of God gathered by God’s call and assembled in Christ’s name, we become the Body of Christ in this assembled community. As the CHURCH we have a special relationship with Christ, with God. During the liturgy we pray, “Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your Church…” We address God in this way because of our relationship through baptism with the greater community of the Church.

THOUGHTFUL MOMENTS
Parenting is a work of mercy
As Christians, we are called to practice the corporal works of mercy. Every day parents have many opportunities to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, comfort the sick, shelter the homeless, and we don’t even have to leave home. In this way, parenting becomes both a job and a prayer.

Something beautiful for God
“To show great love for God and our neighbor we need not do great things. It is how much we put into the doing, that makes our offering something beautiful for God.” (Mother Teresa of Calcutta)
