"Mission to Serve": New Orleans Diary

Vacation Bible School

15TH SUNDAY OF
ORDINARY TIME
July 15/16, 2006
What need for repentance do you see in the world? In your own heart?
Gospel Reflection (Mark 6:7-13): If you and a partner were sent to several different schools to talk about your faith, what worries might you have? When Jesus sent his apostles out two by two, he warned them that some people would not welcome them. He insisted that they take to the road without food or money, trusting in God and the goodness of their hosts. If people would not provide for them or listen to their message, they were to move on to the next place.
But those who accepted the apostles were rewarded. The sick were healed, the possessed were freed of demons, and sinners were reconciled.
Discussion Points for Gospel: Jesus sent his apostles forth as missionaries without backpacks but not without training. They had learned from his word and example what they were to teach. What kinds of training have you been given at home, at school, or in the community? How have you shared the training you received? If you were asked to teach younger children a faith lesson, what kinds of materials might you want to take with you?
If you had been one of the Twelve, what would your response to being sent out almost empty-handed have been? Give one example of how you have already participated in Jesus’ ministry of teaching or healing. What prayer or practice might help you to grow in trusting God to work through you?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS FOR THE RIDE HOME
15th Sunday in Ordinary Time

As he sent the Twelve off to drive out unclean spirits Jesus instructed his disciples, "Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place. If any place will not welcome you or they refuse to hear you, as you leave shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them" (Mark 6:10-11).

Adults: How does Jesus' approach to resolving conflicts compare with my own ways of dealing with serious disagreements?

Children: How do I deal with conflict with my friends in a Christian way?

MISSION TO SERVE

Well, we have been back for two weeks now, and I think that everyone in the group has definitely learned so many life and faith lessons from this trip. This trip has inspired all of us to put our own lives into perspective and to do more to make our own community a better place.
Thank you so much for your constant love, prayers, and support. We appreciate everything that you have done for us. We truly could not have done any of this without your help!
Please check out the pictures and journal entries of the participants by linking onto our web page from the CTK website.

RESPECT LIFE
Roe v Wade, the Supreme Court decision that essentially legalized abortion on demand for all nine months of pregnancy, has long been considered to be poor constitutional law, even by those who support its outcome. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a Roe supporter, states, "it would have been a more acceptable judicial decision if it had not gone beyond a ruling on the [state abortion law] before the court. Heavy-handed judicial intervention was difficult to justify and appears to have provoked, not resolved, conflict." National Catholic Register, 2-26-3/4/04 editorial, "Lone Ranger's Last Stand."
