THE SIXTEENTH SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
July 17-18, 2010

When do you make time for the “better part” — spending moments with the Lord?

Gospel Reflection (Luke 10:38-42): A guest shows up, probably unexpectedly, and the hostess, Martha, knocks herself out trying to do everything at once. The guest, Jesus, sits down and makes himself at home. The sister of the hostess, Mary, sits with Jesus, and listens thoughtfully. When Martha complains that she is doing all the work, Jesus tells her that she has forgotten the most important thing. She has neglected to listen to Jesus, whose words are more nourishing than any meal.
Discussion Points for Gospel: Most of our lives are a combination of Martha and Mary. However, if our lives are all-Martha-all-the-time, they may be out of balance. We may be missing “the better part.”
The Catechism of the Catholic Church, in its discussion of observing Sunday as a day of worship and rest, declares, “Traditional activities and social necessities require some people to work on Sundays, but everyone should still take care to set aside sufficient time for leisure” (Catechism, 2187). Most people in our country are working more hours a week than ever before. How does this affect their families, their children? What is the responsibility in this area for Catholic supervisors and managers? How can we put more Mary-like listening into our lives? When do we make time to listen to our families? our friends? When do we make time to listen to Jesus?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN
ORDINARY TIME

The offer of hospitality in the readings from Genesis and Luke gives us an idea of the spirit of service required of the disciple. In both readings God's Word reaches the hosts as service or welcome is being extended. Abraham and Sarah are promised a child, and Mary listens to the words of Jesus.
Adults: How can I develop the habit of reading the Scriptures in order to be more attentive to God's Word?

Children: What can I do this week to help out, or serve, another person?

DIOCESAN PARISH SHARE

Progress report
This week there is nothing new to report on the planned capital improvements. We are waiting for reports and estimates from Loudin Rumor Geothermal.
Our goal for this DPSC campaign is at least $55,000.00. This would give us about $30,000.00 to apply to the capital expenditures. With the amounts we have already saved, we should be able to handle these capital improvement costs without the need to borrow funds.
So we are hoping to raise another $22,000 for this project. To date we have had pledges from only about 65 households. We have nearly 400 registered households. A broader parish representation is critical for success. More importantly your household contribution is vital. Thanks so much for your generosity.

Prayers for the DEAD - We pray for the repose of the soul of Majorie Watson, aunt of Linda Maher.
Eternal rest, grant unto her, O Lord.

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
  Sung Prayer
Song is not an interruption to prayer, song is the best kind of prayer. St Augustine said: “The one who sings once, prays twice.” Worship has always included song. The psalms are songs and most of what we sing now has the Book of Psalms as its source. Our external response in song is only one dimension of our participation. Perhaps even more important is uniting oneself to what is being sung so we can together raise our thoughts to God. Even if we cannot sing (for whatever reason) we should be following the words of our song prayer so we are united as one family in our praise of God.
