SIXTEENTH SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
July 18/19, 2009

When will you “come away” with Jesus this week?

Gospel Reflection (Mark 6:30-34): IIf you have ever had the frustrating experience of being interrupted while you were trying to tell about some wonderful adventure, you will understand how the apostles feel in this gospel story. They have just returned from their first missionary journey. They want to tell Jesus all about it. He leads them off to a quiet place where they can tell their stories. But the crowds follow them because they are hungry for Jesus’ teaching and his healing touch.
Seeing the crowd, Jesus is moved to respond to them. They are like sheep that have been scattered. Out of love, the Good Shepherd calls them together and guides them. The apostles’ adventure stories will have to wait.

Discussion Points for Gospel: Describe your probable reaction to the following scene: You are telling your parents at the dinner table all about an exciting event you shared with your friends. Your younger sister or brother keeps interrupting and demanding your parents’ attention. How do you feel? What do you do? When others make demands on you at times when you need to rest, what is your usual response?
What can we learn from the example of Jesus in this gospel story? How will you try to follow that example in your daily life?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

We are always rushing in our society, so a little rest is always coveted and welcomed. We deserve this rest. We work hard, and we are living in difficult times.
Adults: How do I respond when my children, family, or friends interrupt my rest?

Children: When I am tired and trying to rest, but a friend asks for my help, what do I do?

Word of Life Bulletin Briefs
At every Mass, we should offer special prayers for our nation and her leaders, in order that the culture of death may be overcome and a civilization of love may be steadfastly advanced. All Catholics throughout the nation should take part in Eucharistic adoration and in the praying of the Rosary for the restoration of the respect for human life and for the safeguarding of the integrity of the family. In our prayers, we should seek, above all, the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, under her title of the Immaculate Conception.
~Archbishop Raymond L. Burke

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
 Voice of the Assembly
The primary instrument for the liturgy is not the organ or the piano or the guitar but the voice of the assembly. In fact, the singing assembly is the most beautiful sound that the liturgy can make. Usually it is not a polished sound, and can even be an out-of-tune sound. But when it is authentic and resounding, it is the only measure of whether our music is prayer or not. Nothing ever quite matches the full, alive sound of the whole congregation joining together in the praise of God. The word that best describes that event is “Alleluia.” Alleluia is a Hebrew word that translates “God’s people praise God.” This special song of praise is used at many different times and in many different ways, but it is especially at the time immediately before the proclamation of the Gospel that it becomes an acclamation, a kind of shout for joy—always joyful, always sung.
