16TH SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
July 21-22, 2007

When do you make time for the “better part” — spending moments with the Lord?

Gospel Reflection (Luke 10:38-42) A guest shows up, probably unexpectedly, and the hostess, Martha, knocks herself out trying to do everything at once. The guest, Jesus, sits down and makes himself at home. The sister of the hostess, Mary, sits with Jesus, and listens thoughtfully. When Martha complains that she is doing all the work, Jesus tells her that she has forgotten the most important thing. She has neglected to listen to Jesus, whose words are more nourishing than any meal.

Discussion Points for Gospel: Most of our lives are a combination of Martha and Mary. (Even cloistered monks and nuns, devoted to lives of prayer, have hours of work every day.) However, if our lives are all-Martha-all-the-time, they may be out of balance. We may be missing “the better part.” (There is an ironic joke that goes: “At the time of death, no one says, ‘I wish I had spent more time at the office.’ “)

How can we put more Mary-like listening into our lives? When do we make time to listen to our families? our friends? When do we make time to listen to Jesus? (from Sadlier “We Believe”)

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

Simple acts of hospitality can be the entrance into mystery for those with the eyes of faith.

Adults: How can I welcome the stranger and feed the hungry in order to encounter the Lord Jesus in my brothers and sisters?

Children: What can I do this week to show someone a special welcome and friendship?

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED AT UCM DINNERS
CTK has provided the free community supper on the 2nd Thursday of the month at the UCM house on College Street. The college students aren’t here during summer months to help out, so we’re asking for volunteers from CTK to help on August 9.

Food prep begins around 4:00 PM in the basement of UCM, and we serve dinner at 5:30. Clean up is finished by 7:00. We can use help for any part of the evening -- the food is already provided; we just need to cook it, serve it, and then clean up. If you can come and help, please call Mary or Pat Reddan at 740 594 8591.

LITURGY BYTES & BITS
Except for the readings from the Acts of the Apostles during the Easter season, the first reading is taken from the Old Testament. This reading is the faith witness of our ancestors in faith. It is their statement to us of how they saw God working in their lives. It is the story of salvation history, OUR story. The Old Testament is the foundation on which the New Testament is built. It is our common heritage which we share and celebrate together in the Liturgy of the Word. It must always be a reading from sacred Scripture and cannot be replaced by devotional readings from other sources.

THOUGHTFUL MOMENTS
Our Catholic Roots
The Roman Catholic Church is the same one Jesus began. We can trace the Pope’s predecessors directly back to the first pope, St. Peter. The Catholic Church offers us all the truth and gifts that God makes available to us.

Why Do Catholics Do That? -- Why do Catholics honor martyrs?
A martyr is a witness to the faith who remains faithful to Christ even in the face of death.
Christians who will not renounce their faith despite persecution and death have been honored since the first days of the Church. Missionaries, converts and believers around the world suffered through the centuries, and still do. We do not honor them because they suffer, but because their faith remains strong although they suffer.
