"Mission to Serve": New Orleans Diary

Vacation Bible School

16TH SUNDAY OF
ORDINARY TIME

July 22/23, 2006
When do you take “time away” with the Lord? How do you provide “time away” for others?
Gospel Reflection (Mark 6:30-34): If you have ever had the frustrating experience of being interrupted while you were trying to tell about some wonderful adventure, you will understand how the apostles feel in this gospel story. They have just returned from their first missionary journey. They want to tell Jesus all about it. He leads them off to a quiet place where they can tell their stories. But the crowds follow them because they are hungry for Jesus’ teaching and his healing touch.
Seeing the crowd, Jesus is moved to respond to them. They are like sheep that have been scattered. Out of love, the Good Shepherd calls them together and guides them. The apostles’ adventure stories will have to wait.

Discussion Points for Gospel: Describe your probable reaction to the following scene: You are telling your parents at the dinner table all about an exciting event you shared with your friends. Your younger sister or brother keeps interrupting and demanding your parents’ attention. How do you feel? What do you do? When others make demands on you at times when you need to rest, what is your usual response?
What can we learn from the example of Jesus in this gospel story? How will you try to follow that example in your daily life?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS FOR THE RIDE HOME
16th Sunday in Ordinary Time

When Jesus and the disciples seek some rest, the crowds follow them to a deserted place. It is apparent that the life and message of Jesus struck a chord with a large number of people. Jesus seems to meet the need and longing they have for something meaningful in their lives.

Adults: What about Jesus' message most appeals to me? Why?

Children: What is my favorite story about Jesus?
ARE YOU BEING CALLED?

RESPECT LIFE
"The recognition of the sacred character of human life and of its inviolability -- a principle admitting no exceptions -- is not some trivial little problem or question that may be considered relative, in view of the pluralism of opinions we find in modern society. . . Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger (Pope Benedict XVI) in Christianity and the Crisis of Cultures.

It’s great exercise and lots of fun, and it opens up a whole new world of friends and social entertainment. Classes meet ten evenings, probably Tuesdays and Thursdays, for two hours of combined instruction and practice. All you need are smooth-soled shoes and a partner to start, but if you don’t have a partner, let us know and we’ll see if we can find one for you. Even if you always thought you have two left feet, come on out and give it a try. It’s FUN! The cost is $98 per person for one hour of credit or $50 for noncredit. For more information contact Jane at jane.tompkins@gmail.com or (740) 667-6768. See you on the dance floor!
