SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
July 25/26, 2009

What can your family do to prevent the waste of God’s gifts?

Gospel Reflection (John 6:1-15): When large crowds gather, exciting and unexpected things can happen. That’s the way it was when Jesus went up on a mountain shortly before the Passover feast. He had no idea that a crowd of five thousand would soon gather around him. They were determined to hear him speak and to see what great signs he might work. Unlike his disciples, Jesus was not concerned about how this huge crowd was to be fed on a few loaves and fishes.
In familiar actions we recognize, Jesus took the bread, broke it, blessed it and gave it to his guests. When the crowd realized that everyone had been fed and there were still leftovers, they were astounded. They wanted to carry Jesus off on their shoulders and make him their king.

Discussion Points for Gospel: Imagine that you, your family, and friends were part of the crowd that followed Jesus up on the mountain. You are surrounded by thousands of people in an area away from the city. What expectations might you have? What concerns? How might you respond when you heard that Jesus was attempting to feed everyone on one boy’s picnic lunch? What might you do when you realized what Jesus had done? How would you feel about his retreat from the crowd’s acclaim?
Look back at the story. How does it encourage you to act when you feel that you have little to offer to those in need?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Elisha’s servant in today’s first reading sees a limited amount of food for a large number of people. He cannot grasp, as the disciples in the Gospel cannot grasp, that with God a little can be abundance.
Adults: When have I seen only the limits of a situation and later realized that I had failed to grasp what God can do with meager resources?

Children: How does God help me live and grow each day?

For $7 per adult and $3 per child a chicken you can have a delicious chicken OR ham dinner. There will be BINGO, raffles and other games. Everyone is WELCOME!
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL
Approximately 35-40 students, Pre-K through sixth grade, and another 12-15 Junior High and High School students joined a team of 20 adults to experience Rome and the Underground Church. Based on the writings of St. Paul to the Romans, the week included a journey to ancient Rome to meet and learn from St. Paul who was in prison as well as experiences in the Underground Church in a cave, Roman Games, traditional Roman food, and Extollo (praise through song).
There was a Marketplace that included scribes, a school, leather workers, jewelry workers, and carpenters. Soldiers, chariot rides and togas were in evidence, too. The children learned about Rome at the time of the early Christians as well as the trial and challenges of being an early Christian. Ask one of the children or adults what the Icthus (fish) symbol means.
Adults were included in this wonderful learning opportunity. They were able to spend time studying the writing of St. Paul.
Thanks to all the individuals who spent so much time and energy ‘building’ Rome and the Underground Church and providing this fun learning experience.
ST. FRANCIS SOCIETY
We will meet at CTK at 10:00 AM on Friday, August 7, and travel by car to Sacred Heart Church in Pomeroy. Following a tour of the church, we will celebrate Mass at 11:15 AM and then go to a local restaurant for lunch.

WORDS OF LIFE -- Bulletin Briefs
“The twentieth century often tried to do without that cornerstone, and attempted to build the city of man without reference to Him. It ended by actually building that city against man! Christians know that it is not possible to reject or ignore God without demeaning man. Allow me, dear young people, to consign this hope of mine to you: you must be those “builders”! You are the men and women of tomorrow. The future is in your hearts and in your hands. God is entrusting to you the task, at once difficult and uplifting, of working with him in the building of the civilization of love.”
~Pope John Paul II
(Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, 2009)
FAMILY VOCATION OUTING - On Saturday, August 15, there will be a Family Vocation Outing sponsored by our Diocesan Office of Vocations and the Knights of Columbus from the southern area of our diocese. Opportunities will be available for the children to meet and hear from a priest, seminarian and sister about their vocation. There is no cost for this event.
Families can spend the afternoon at the nearby Water Park ($3 to $5 per person) and can bring their own lunch or purchase it at the concession stand. The day concludes with a cookout supper at 5:00 pm at the KofC Hall in Marietta. Reservations are due no later than August 8 and can be made on the diocesan web page http://home.catholicweb.com/diosteubvo or call Steve Musser at 740-992-3381.
LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
Communion Music
Communion time is procession time and for that reason a time for music. It can be somewhat difficult to sing, walk, follow ushers’ instructions, and find your way back to the right pew again. Many parishes try to solve this problem by choosing songs with a refrain that is easily learned by heart. Sometimes the song leader or music group will sing the verses for that very reason. Refrains that are straightforward, and yet memorable, are preferred. Because our communion is with one another as well as with Jesus Christ, singing together is an important part of expressing our togetherness.
Music for communion need not be slow to be appropriate. Reverent does not necessarily mean slow. Not only songs which speak of bread and wine are appropriate. Songs which speak of our relationship and responsibility to one another because of our interrelatedness in Jesus Christ speak of the true meaning of communion. Remember that this sacrament was instituted in the context of service. Jesus washed the apostles’ feet. Song is appropriate to the action and meaning at this time. So ask yourself: “How well am I doing in contributing my voice to the worship of the gathered community?”
