17TH SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
July 28/29, 2007

Whom do you know who is seeking the Lord? Can you assist in their search?

Gospel Reflection (Luke 11:1-13) What a wonderful scene Luke paints for us today! The disciples watch Jesus at prayer. They see how much prayer means to him. One of them gets up the nerve to ask, “Lord, will you teach us to pray?” And Jesus responds by sharing the Lord’s Prayer with them. (This is a shorter version than the one we pray from Matthew 6:9-13.) Then Jesus completes his lesson prayer by telling two parables. The first urges us to persist in prayer. The second reminds us that we do not always pray for the right things. God knows best how our prayers should be answered.

Discussion Points for Gospel:
Imagine that you are in the group of disciples who asked Jesus to teach them to pray. Are you surprised that this prayer seems so simple and easy? Try praying one line of the Our Father each day, at various times all during the day. The first day, pray, “Father, hallowed be your name.” The second day, pray, “Father, your kingdom come.” And so on. How can you hallow?make holy?God’s name? How can you help God’s kingdom to come? How can you appreciate and share daily bread and all the gifts you receive from the Father each day? How can you ask for forgiveness and give forgiveness to others? (from Sadlier “We Believe”)

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jesus has taught us that we should persist in asking God for what we want, even if it seems initially that he is not listening.

Adults: What are the deepest desires of my heart that I should be pouring out to God in prayer?

Children: What is it that I would like to take to God in prayer this week?
REST IN PEACE

Please pray for the repose of the soul of parishioner Susie Shanmugham who died Friday morning after a long and valiant struggle. We offer our sympathy and prayers to Dr. Shan, Anita, Manoj and Jason and the family. May Susie and all who have died, rest in the peace of our Lord.
Calling hours will be at CTK on Sunday from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. followed by the Vigil. There will also be calling hours here on Monday morning from 10:00 - 11:00 prior to the 11:00 funeral. Following the funeral there will be a get-together with refreshments in the Parish Center for those who wish to spend some time with the family.
*Please note: we won’t have 12:15 daily Mass Monday.

CHURCH PICNIC -- TODAY!
Today’s the day for St. John’s Annual Homecoming at the church on Dutch Ridge Road in Guysville. A chicken or ham dinner will be served beginning at noon for $5 per adult and $3 per child. BINGO, raffles and other games will be offered. Don’t forget: the building is now air conditioned! So come to the Homecoming and enjoy food, fun and fellowship in cool comfort!!! Everyone is welcome!
Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
As I prepare to end my time with you and return to the seminary, I want to thank you for the kindness and welcome you have shown to me these past 10 weeks. It has been a great privilege for me to be with you this summer, and this assignment has been one of the highlights of my years of priestly formation. You have a wonderful parish, and Fr. Marty is such a fine man. I will long treasure my time spent with him. I will miss all of you, and I hope that we can stay in touch. As St. Monica prepared for her journey to eternal life, she asked one thing of her son St. Augustine, who is my patron saint: “Remember me at the altar of the Lord.” Although my journey is much less great than Monica’s, I ask the same request of each of you. May God bless you.

PEACE & JUSTICE NOTES

Dr. Greg Kremer, Chair of OU’s Mechanical Engineering Dept. and active member of Christ the King Catholic Church, will present a public lecture entitled “Is Coal in our Future? An Engineer’s Perspective” on Tuesday, July 31, at 7:30 p.m. in the Athens Public Library meeting room. ST. FRANCIS SOCIETY
Members will travel to St. Bernard Church in Beverly, OH on Friday, August 3, for Mass at 11:00 AM. We will then go to the Stockport Mill Inn for lunch at the restored mill on the Muskingum River. We will leave Christ the King Church at 9:30 AM and return at approximately 3:00 PM. Please sign up on the sheets posted on the bulletin board in the Parish Center if you are planning to attend. The restaurant requires a reservation and needs an accurate count of the number of people attending.
LITURGY BYTES & BITS
The role of the Lector is to proclaim God’s word. This is different from reading. To proclaim the word, the lector must be so familiar with what is being read that it becomes a statement of faith from the lector. In order to gain that familiarity, the lector must read the selection during the week and pray about it in order to know how best to proclaim it to make the meaning clear to God’s people. It’s less like reading a story than like telling a story. The word is personal and is to be delivered in a personal manner with eye contact, because the word that is read/proclaimed is the word from God to each of us and to all of us.

THOUGHTFUL MOMENTS
Tips for Improving Mass Manners

Even older children have trouble focusing during Mass from time to time, but enduring Mass with disruptive children can be trying on everyone involved. Try these tips to improve your children’s Mass manners so they can experience it with their hearts and minds:
Practice sitting still. Take a few minutes each day and read from your family Bible Choose Gospel stories with which your children are familiar, then move on to the Old Testament or epistles. That will help children become familiar with what they will hear.
Bring an age-appropriate missal. Missals that are geared toward your children’s ages can help them follow and understand the Mass better. Not only do good children’s missals include Mass prayers, they often include explanations so youngsters can follow what is going on.
Share peace. Giving the sign of peace is a great way to get all children involved. Practice at home so your youngsters will know how to appropriately greet grown-ups as fellow-Christians.
Reward reverence. Reinforce good behavior with a treat after Mass is over.
