EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY
OF ORDINARY TIME

August 2/3, 2008

How has Jesus worked miracles for your family?

Gospel Reflection (Matthew 14:13-21): As this reading begins, Jesus is mourning the death of John the Baptist. He goes off in a boat to be alone, but the crowd follows him by land. They want to hear Jesus and to be healed by him. Forgetting his own sorrow, Jesus returns to shore to be with the people.
When the disciples want to send the crowd home at mealtime, Jesus says, “Give them something to eat.” The disciples have only five loaves and two fishes. Yet when Jesus blesses the food there is somehow enough for everyone, with plenty left over.

Discussion Points for Gospel: Does this miracle story remind you of the Eucharist? Take a moment to thank God, who satisfies our needs in the Eucharist.

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Eighteenth Sunday of Ordinary time

Jesus is clear. No Christian can be a simple observer before the needs of others. No follower of Jesus can be an innocent bystander. In the body of Christ, when one member suffers, all members suffer with them.

Adults: How am I helping to satisfy the deeper spiritual hunger and thirst that people experience today?

Children: How do I feel when I am asked to share my toys or snacks with my brothers, sisters or friends? What would Jesus like me to do?

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL NEWS
Vacation Bible School was a terrific success. With a theme park setting the children received 5 tickets, one for each day: 1. Choose to believe; 2. choose to act; 3. choose to forgive; 4. choose to obey; 5. choose Jesus. Many, many, thanks to parents and parishioners who helped to make this a valued time for our children.
The St. Vincent de Paul Society especially appreciated the service project of collected food.
Cheryl Kraus and Sherry Curp were the coordinators. Thanks so much.
R.C.I.A. NEWS
On Thursday, August 21, at 7:00 pm at St. Paul’s Church, there will be a “Come and See” community gathering for those who have an interest in finding out more about what it means to be Catholic.
This kind of gathering is a new effort for our parishes in broadening the outreach of our RCIA program.
Most people come to RCIA because they have been invited by a friend. Who can we invite? We are the ones who best know that answer. Please pray about who it is that you may ask to come to this gathering and “Come and See.”

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Are you a faith-filled person who loves children? Perhaps you are being called to be a person who “echoes God’s Word” as a catechist. The Religious Education Program has openings for catechists at all grade levels (pre-K through 8). We meet on Sundays at 12:15 or Tuesdays at 6:30 during the school year. If you are interested and would like to know more about how you can contribute, please contact Nancy Denhart, Director of Religious Education 590-3302 or 592-2711 or ndenhart@ctkathens.org for an appointment. We do provide in-service and help for all in the catechetical program.
CATHOLIC LADIES OF COLUMBIA
The next meeting of the CLC will be Monday, August 11. Members are asked to gather at CTK in the Parish Center Chapel at 6:15 to pray the Rosary. The meeting, hosted by Anna Mae Dunphy (593-6983) and Pat Moorehead (592-3704), will follow the Rosary.
WOMEN’S RETREAT: “HEALING FAITH”
   September 5-
7 marks the date of the 2nd Sisters on the River retreat. Registration begins Friday the 5th at 6:00 pm and the retreat ends Sunday at noon. It will be held at the home of Pat Moore in Racine, Ohio. The cost is $25 and is due by August 15. Check out the bulletin boards in church and the PC for registration forms and the flyer.
LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
Preparation for Communion
The presider has a brief prayer which he says before receiving Communion. This is a private prayer and is to be said inaudibly. During this time the people also continue their personal preparation for Communion.

RESPECT LIFE
“It is morally incoherent to say that abortion is wrong at some stages, and by some methods, but unacceptable at others. Human life is indivisible in its moral value. Either it is always and everywhere sacred, or it is always and everywhere disposable. There can be no middle ground.”
(Father Frank Pavone, Priests for Life)
SACRED HEART RETREAT HOUSE EVENTS
A Day of Celebration, Welcome and Fun at Sacred Heart Retreat House! If you’ve never seen the retreat house, or, even if you have, come spend some time on the beautiful grounds with us on Saturday, August 16, and just wander around to see the gardens, paths, etc. The gate and house will be open from 11:00 a.m. till 9:00 p.m. You might even find Father Gallagher on the grounds at some time, so welcome him back home. Anybody else new? Welcome them also. Have you ever stepped in a pool of noodles? Or do you like cornhole? These are just a few of the games you’ll find on the grounds. Bring a dish to pass.

A note from Paul:
“Greetings! I’m Paul whom you’ve probably met in the Acts of the Apostles, writing to invite you and your family to a unique experience on Saturday, August 30, from 10:00 till 2:30 at Sacred Heart Retreat House. It will be a time of games, activities, food, music, prayer, stretching your imagination through sharing with other families. Hope to see you there. Call 740-667-0100 for reservations.”
