18TH SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
August 4/5, 2007

Describe the spiritual inheritance you hope to leave to your family and friends.

Gospel Reflection (Luke 12:13-21) As so often happens, Jesus tells a parable because someone has asked him a question. A man wants him to settle a squabble about an inheritance, but Jesus will have no part of it.
Concern about money prevents people from focusing on the reign of God. The parable of the rich farmer shows how foolish it is to keep piling up possessions. Right when the greedy man is gorging himself on food and drink, he dies. Death prevents any chance of reform.

Discussion Points for Gospel:
How important is making money? Jesus knows that we all need enough to live on. Each person’s need will be a little bit different. Each family’s needs will be a little bit different. But Jesus warns here against piling up money and ignoring what really makes us rich -- love of God and love of others.
In our society, we must all spend some time making money. How much time? How much of our thought and energy goes into this? How do we keep ourselves from spending too much time and energy on making money? Does our need to make money take too much time away from family and friends?
Of course, we do not work just for money. Every job is an opportunity to love God and others. How do you love God and others in your work? If your work is being a student, how do you love God and others while you are at school?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jesus taught that the poor in spirit are among the blessed in heaven, and he warned about how difficult it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God.

Adults: How am I like the foolish rich man in Jesus' parable who felt his accumulated wealth made it possible for him to "eat, drink, be merry" (Luke 12:19), heedless of other considerations?

Children: How am I sometimes greedy or selfish, wishing I had what others have, and unwilling to share my things with others?

LITURGY BYTES & BITS
Silence. We don’t have very much of it during the liturgy. Two places where it usually occurs, if only briefly, is after each of the first two readings. Before plunging into the psalm we are invited to take time to reflect on the word which has been proclaimed to us. Likewise, after the second reading, we are invited to reflect on the word before we move on to the Gospel. Frequently there is also silence following the homily and following communion.

THOUGHTFUL MOMENTS
Have a holy summer

The lazy days of summer can be a great time to bring your family closer to God. Try ideas like these to have a happy and holy summer:
Sing a psalm. Choose a psalm that praises God for his mercy, kindness and love, such as Psalm 103. Learn a new line each week and sing or recite it together at dinner time or bed time. By summer’s end, you will have learned a new way to praise God.
Strengthen a virtue. For example, fortitude can be practiced by setting a family exercise goal and consistently working toward it together. Temperance can be practiced by limiting the amount of time spent watching television or using the computer.
Learn a new prayer. Choose a time of day when the whole family can be together. Then pick a prayer to say at that time, such as “Come, Holy Spirit,” the prayer to St. Michael, or the morning or evening offering prayers. For ideas, consult Catholic Household Blessings and Prayers from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (202-722-8716,
www.usccb.org).
Visit him each week. Weekly Mass is an important way to bring your family closer to God. Even when you are on vacation, visit www.parishesonline.com to find a Mass close by.
